Hi Gang,
Any thoughts about Ford and Volvo remaining together as a team? Ford and Jaguar it seems are headed for a separation of ways, and Land Rover.....who knows? I see what GM did for Saab, and quite frankly, I'm disappointed with the results.
The C30 looks to be a great addition for Volvo--I gather it will be presented at the Paris show in Sept. Let's hope that it doesn't take another year for the car to get here! Do you think that a hybrid Volvo makes much sense these days? I've read nothing in any publication about the possibility of Volvo producing one. Perhaps high performance diesels may show up here as well as Europe. Your imput is always facinating to read, and I appreciate your time to reply!
Cheers,
Newie

I have no problem buying a Ford-influenced Volvo, but perhaps Volvo would do well going back to Volvo International? They must be making huge profits with all the semi's I see and construction equipment, etc.

Like it or not, Volvo and Ford are going to be together for a long time.
Also, don't believe that Jag is going away just yet.
Volvo has no plans for a hybrid anytime soon. The Volvo engineers are not enamoured of the cost and complexity of hybrids which would have little or no gain over the current diesels.
Most people buy hybrids because it allows them to think they are doing something for the environment.
Volvo has a history of environmental activism that is better than any car company on earth, they just don't build cars to take advantage of fads.

Um yes they are.
Look at any of the car companies that are on the cutting edge of auto technology. They are all less than fully reliable.
In fact, Mercedes is trying to de-emphasize technology in their new cars to reestablish the brands reliability.
Your Volvo is stone age in comaprision to a modern one, no wonder it has been reliable there is simply nothing to go wrong.
Your 740 may have one computer in it. The S80 has 18.

No offense, but heavy trucks don't have to be engineered to the same standards as passenger cars. They don't have to meet the same emmissions or safety regs. They don't have to be as quiet or comfortable.
I am in the auto business and I do have a very good idea of what it costs to design and build a car from the ground up.
Unless there is an engineer from Paccar or Volvo Truck or MAN or Scania to tell me differently, I will stand by what I have said.
Don't expect Volvo to have a stand alone product as models change over. The new S80 is a global Ford platform and so too will all new Volvos. That's just the way it is....and will be.

I would expect Ford to keep volvo for quite a while. GM and ford have a significantly different management structure and philosphy.
German and british fords were always different from american fords. I would not anticipate ford screwing around with the same sort of badge engineering that GM is famous for.
Saab and subaru now share an absolutely hideous design for an SUV -- all thanks to GM. Ford, at least, understands something about branding.
By the way, the reason that volvo dumped cars for trucks and equipment is because there is going to be a limited car market in the future due to the massive increases in the costs of fossil fuel.
