Hey guys long time no talk, I have a question that i am hoping someone can help me answer. I found some brand new factory volvo fog lamps for sale from a dealer for around $130 with a $40 software update. Now i talked to their service department and they said it would cost me another $300 on top of the $170 to install the fog lamps... Now here is my question. Could I purchase the fog lamps and get the dealer to do the software update and then take the lamps to someone else to do the install? Can the software update be done before the install of the lamps? Paying almost $500 for a set of fog lamps just seems a little insane. Anyone have any suggestions or experience in this area ? Thanks so much in advance for your time you guys!

Hey your alive!
I dont see why you should have to pay that much money to have fog lamps. You could do it yourself with little to no knowledge on wiring. You could even get the PIAA lamps for 1/4 of the price.

Re: Fog Lamps for my 2002 s80 (Donnie Darko)

Do the install yourself like I did...did not take very long at all. I bought the kit from a local dealer for like 179. Install is VERY straight forward.
The wiring is already there. You just need to look behind the dummy panels where your fogs should be and see if the wiring is there just waiting for the upgrade. I was told all S80's come prewired.
You simply screw them in the provided holes, plug them in, then go to the dash and pop out the headlight switch which just pries out. Then you pop off the cover, take out the dummy blank switch, put in the new working switch, put the headlight switch cover back on, and push the switch assembly right back in place.
Next up, you add a fuse to the fuse block under the dash, and plug in a relay under the dash. Detailed instructions came with my kit. The kit will have everything that's needed.
Finally, head over to your local dealer and get the download needed to switch on the circuit.
wa-la ...fog lights...can be done in under and hour if I remember correct.
Tim

My question exactly. Just way too much to pay. Do the PIAAs fit like the Volvo oem ones? i mean do they fill the gap? are there a particular set or part number for PIAA that fit the volvo s80. Also, is the softtware upgrade absolutely necessary ? I have been so busy in the studio i haven't had much time tot work on the car or check the forums lately. bummer. Anyway, again, all help greatly appreciated Copeland or anyone else for that mattter!

T6 TIM! You must have posted that as i was making my 2nd post! Thanks SO much for your reply. Do you recommend the OEM fogs for the PIAA ones? I was going to get a 6k HID plug and play kit for my head lamps as well. Anyway, i love this forum. You post a question after you have used the wonderful 'search' function of course... people answer it

Re: (t6tim)

Your dealer wants 470 for everything.
If you get the kit for 124+10 shipping = 134
Ask for a deal on the new switch, prob 100
Then the software is 40
You still much better off at 274 and doing the install yourself. I'd stick with the factory kit (esp taking into consideration the car is pre-wired)
No hassles down the road IMO.
Keep us posted,
Tim

Tim ,
Just had to be my year that there was a 'hitch' or an ENTIRE headlight switch replacement. Hopefully it won't be too difficult and i do have a guy at a performance shop that said he would help me get these in if after i talked to volvo (talking to you and copeland way better than talking tot them btw)... Ill call volvo tomorrow and see if i can get a nice price for the purchase of 2. That ebay link was exactly who i was going to buy it from. So justt the lamps and the switch should be around $300 the software $40 and the install maybe a case of good beer... wow, all for fogs.. the hids should be another $400.... $700 on lighting alone. i better be careful not to rear end anyone . knock on wood everyone!

Drink the beer yourself and do the install.
Well, drink it after, otherwise you may try mounting one of the fogs in your trunk or somethin...
Easy project, no cutting or splicing, just plug it all together.
Tim

Okay so just got off the phone with that dealer whos advertising on ebay for the $127 fog lamps. He sasys he has never heard of a switch for the 02 or any other model of the s80s for the fog lamps and all i need is what comes in the kit minus the software update which he NOW tells me will be around $40 for the update and then around $150 to download said ugrade into my car's computer and thats not even installing the damn things.... man, i am SO confused now! I looked at where the fogs would sit and there are pre drilled holes up there so it looks like i can do it myself and i WILL be doing it myself (im really excited about that part) but almost $200 bucks for the program and download to my car seems a bit highg... anyone gone throught this one? Thanks again to all for your helo.
Copeland,
The recording is coming along nicely and we are shooting to finish up later this month. I just saw our video on FUSE the other night and it made me happy but damn that video is like 2 years old, time to get a new one on there for cryin out loud!!!!

Thats what i was saying Kiss the ass damn it!!!! but alas i really want the fogs they really make the front end look nicer. i have an 02 black on black 2.9. the thing is beautiful. Anyway, i was thinking if i bought the fogs from them would they sell me the software on a disc or dvd for $40 and if they did could i take it to an independent volvo mechanic that would be able to upload it to my car? also, if i didnt get the software uploaded would the fog lights still work but would i just get an error message? i cant believe these dudes! thanks for the help as always!
Im in a rock band that is recording right now... When i saw the name Copeland on the s80 forum i asked him if it was named after the band Copeland that we are on the same label with... anyway, my s80 is helping me keep my mind off of the stress of recording. i did however test drive a v70 r this weekend... god it was BEAUTIFUL!

Re: (phuz)

I remember reading about this before (on here)....There was one particular model year that needed the entire headlight switch swapped out if adding fogs. If me ory serves me it had to due with the number of wires that came off the switch at the rear. Your particular year's switch was unable to be "communicated with".
I just didnt remember what year it was. But seeing the link here http://www.vlvworld.com/indexf...1.htm cleared that right up. Call them at 450-764-9226 and double check, but I doubt they would list that for no reason.
I would say the guy at your dealer's parts counter has not come across someone w/ an 02 that wants to add fogs.
I would not pay more than 50-60 bucks for the download to switch the fogs on. Call another dealer.
EDIT.....Ok just got off the phone with a local dealer. Parts man confirmed on the 2002 only S80, the headlamp switch must be swappep when adding fogs. It has to do with communication with the fuel door release button. He said it clearly states this in the footnotes while looking up the part # in the system. (It's footnote #7)
Ok, I'm done now, time to mow the lawn.
Keep us informed!
Tim
