Due to an unfortunate tractor incident, the whole front sandwich of my radiator, stock intercooler, and condenser is damaged. The stock intercooler is roughly $400 from FCP, which is quite a bit of my "winter mod fund" out the window.

If I understand/remember correctly (having trouble finding the install thread I swear I saw on here once), a FMIC bypasses the stock intercooler entirely, right? So I could spend a bit more money and buy a FMIC instead of replacing the stock one?

A front mount is simply that, an intercooler mounted on the front of the vehicle. That's what you have already. You wouldn't be bypassing anything, just replacing it with a unit of superior air cooling efficiency. You'll have to remove your oem intercooler from the sandwitch no matter what, so I would just drop an oem fit style one while your in there, like IPD's or D088's for example.

A front mount is just an upgrade to your stock intercooler. You also get stainless steel piping. I would spend the extra money for performance gains, and it's looks awesome too!

That's basically what I was getting at. I just needed to make sure that I didn't need my stock intercooler to be functioning in conjunction with the FMIC. Now, which kit?! I'm looking at the CX Racing kit on eBay (http://m.ebay.com/itm/CXRacing-Inte...0-07-Volvo-P2-V70-XC70-2-4T-S60-/161669172426) and Phuzzy's. I really like that the CX Racing kit replaces the charge air pipe as well as everything else, plus it saves $75 over Phuz's kit with free shipping and all. But, I feel like Phuz's kit is more tried and true. Any thoughts?

Why in the world would you ever buy a brand new stock intercooler? They never wear out and every single rear ended Volvo turbo car has one in it. They're like $50 at a junkyard.

That said, I'm all for upgrading.

Technically speaking, a front mount intercooler mounts out in front of all the other cooling components, the theory being you get max airflow and cooling over it, which is 100% true. The factory intercooler is behind the a/c condenser so it's not a true front mount. But like most things in the mod world the gain from having it out there vs in the stock location is a small percentage, the real gain is having a better core that cools more/faster.

True FMIC kits are going to require a lot more cutting and fitting to get the thing out in front of the car, with a full custom hose kit and all that.

Drop in intercoolers are definitely superior to the stock one, but way easier to install without the extra fabrication headache of what most front mount kits are going to require.

I'll sell you my T5 one I'm removing this week if you want it very reasonable. I just sold a used Phuzzy Kit I had on my VR for a year. Not the best kit IMO. Plan on it taking 6 weeks to get all the parts shipped from THREE different locations. I just purchased the IPD intercooler and I will say I am DAMN impressed with it. It weights 35lbs and is HUGE. Not technically a FMIC but data from IPD and DO88 (which is roughly the same) shows very low pressure drop vs a FMIC due to all the extra piping needed in a FMIC setup. Every turn and bend is more pressure drop. My Phuzzy kit had roughly 3psi drop vs STOCK R Cooler. If you can save for a IPD or DO88, I would go that route. Easier to mount, less tubing and less pressure loss. The Phuzzy kit DOES NOT come with everything you need to install. You will need to fabricate your own intercooler mounting bracket. Its a PITA. If not the IPD or Do88, the Snabb is a complete kit that most have good luck with. Don't bother with their BIG kit, the engine will never see that kind of power without serious mods like larger turbo and darton sleeves.

Can't afford anything other than the CX Racing or Phuzzy kit right now:( Ocean, how much would you be looking for the one off of your T5? Then I could get my car going again and save for the Do88 the IPD one is only listed for R models, unfortunately
