Just did another ATF drain and refill (1 gallon volvo oem ATF synthetic) and also engine oil change using Mobil 1 synthetic and the car is running like a charm. I highly recommend using Volvo ATF synthetic and Mobil 1 synthetic for your cars. You will definitely notice the difference.
Re: Fluid change (blackTT55)

Back in the day Volvo used to recommend replacing the brake fluid every 2 years or 30k miles. Often over looked today also is the Angle gear oil. all that heat from the exhaust and engine. It should be on the list for frequent replacement as well. It too is synthetic 75-90 weight.

Re: Fluid change (blackTT55)

One of the Speed Channel shows listed 13 fluids that needed to be replaced/renewed at regular intervals. I can't remember all thirteen but I wonder how many there are on our Volvos. Now their list included windshield washer fliud and I believe AC refrigerant. Motor oil, brake fluid, power steering, etc.

i agree on the synthetic trans flush. it actually may help shift patterns. its pretty expensive fluid but well worth it

Can you explain how you drain the Tranny fluid.
Is there a drain plug?
Where do you add the new fluid once you drain it?

The tranny on my T5 is a geartronic 5 speed auto AW55-50 and requires Volvo synthetic. If you have the 4 speed AW50-50, then you do not have to use synthetic. Mobil 3309 ATF would be good substitute. Locate the tranny drain plug near the engine oil drain plug but requires a larger socket (I think 22). Just open drain plug and only about 4 quarts will come out. The other half (4 quarts) will remain inside unless you flush it out. Let it drain for about 20 min., put the drain plug back in and locate the ATF dipstick (just left and below the airbox). You will need a long funnel (about 1 feet) with a small hole at the end and simply pour in 4 quarts of the ATF into the dipstick pipe.
Re: Fluid change (blackTT55)

hi,
this may sound strange but i just called my authorized volvo dealer and asked them about the tranny fluid for my 2001 S60 T5 geartronic.
this is what the guy said exactly : "in your periodic services, we only check the tranny for leaks and stuff but we never change the tranny fluid on a geartronic volvo. this tranny fluid is meant to outlast the car. the geartronic box is never be opened and the tranny fluid is never to be changed unless it is used very very harshly and thus wears out and causes a problem."

what do you think ?...

The Vadis states that you should only change the gearbox oil if TCM 0042, 0046 are stored or if the TCM receives data about the operating temp of the gearbox.
Now, that is for my 2002 T5, havent looked up other models.
So, seems wierd to me but that is straight from Volvo.

Re: Fluid change (blackTT55)

it is hidden under the mass of coolant hoses, you might need a flashlight and look from the side a bit. it is there, i saw one today at the dealer with a service writer so i know it is there.

Re: Fluid change (blackTT55)

yep, it IS there. it is yellow and down pretty far and you must look from the side below the junction of hoses. it is just to the left and below the air box. we used a flashlight as the car was inside.
edit; guys save some money and use the mobil atf 3309. it is the same as the volvo oil, (my dealer is now using it also), my manual for my new '06 v70 even states to use jws 3309 fluid and does not even print the volvo part number like my '03 v40 manual does.
