I had left my car (07 S60R) parked on the street and left on another car to pick up some stuff for work (too big to fit in my car). On the way back it started raining heavily, and apparently the pumps that are supposed to take water out from the streets were clogged so when I got back, my car was almost half way up the wheels in water... I opted to leave it and wait for the water to go down rather than turn it on and have water in the engine. Water kept rising and got to half way up the wheels.
Finally it stopped raining, water went down, I went to move the car (it was going to start raining again) and discovered water got in (about 2 inches on the floor). I dried as much as I could with a vacuum cleaner (that does water also) and turned it on to go home (safe place!). I got an error immediately about the active chassis system... drove home and there was nothing wrong with the way it drove. My friend told me he saw water come out of the exhaust pipe when I turned it on.
The next day I wanted to take it to the dealership to have it looked at, and it wouldn't turn on (took 2 tries). After it did, I got the same active chassis error and also anti skid and an engine error... got on the highway and the car wouldn't shift to 4th (automatic). I looked at the messages and I got a brake error... don't remember exactly what it said. Got off the highway, called a flatbed truck and had it taken there. When we put it on the flat bed truck water was still coming out because of the incline. The driver told me: "man... water damage... your car is totaled!"
I thought it was just the computer, and when I go to the dealership, they told me it was maybe just that, and they would need to rip the carpet to check for more damage and they would let me know.
So my question to you guys is: "based on these facts, do you think I can keep it?" Will I have more troubles later? What should I make sure the dealer does to avoid any further complications? Will the bottom rails of the seats rust?
Thanks for any input... I am really hoping it is ok. (my insurance would pay if it is totaled, and I got that extra insurance that would cover whatever difference from book value and price paid.)
Once again, Thanks!

I would first file a claim with the insurance. Its hard to tell if your going to have problems in the future. There is a lot of electronics on the car and some may work properly now and may brake the next day.

Re: (s140s)

But wouldn't these parts that break need to be underwater? if they replace everything that was underwater I should be ok right? Tried looking for any new R online, but I think it is too late to find those

Dude that sucks huge donkey d*ck!! Sorry for the loss!
I'd say she's a goner. Keeping a water damaged R is like roller staking on a 2x4 across the Grand Canyon.
Sure the dealer can replace the parts that where soaked, but there is no telling which other parts have shorted or will short out in the future.

Re: Flood damage question (JRL)

ok, so wait to see what insurance has to say...
what sucks the most is I have no idea what to replace it with if it is gone. I hope they say it was something minor... it was really 2 inches of water, it didn't even touch the bottom of the seats.
I mean, if the insurance says it is not totaled, it is not like I can fight it right?

Re: (Chilled Man)

well, if they don't fix everything the first time, I'll make sure to tell insurance people that any other damage related to this incident will be on the same claim! so I don't get hit by the deductible again.
I'll get you guys some pics tomorrow of the other cars I saw.... some had water almost covering the trunk.
I've been looking at cars all day online. There is NOTHING I want (that I can afford ).

I once had a similar issue with my 04 R. It didn't get wet inside that I knew of though...The water came up pretty high, but not to the extent you got it seems. Mine was also a stick...don't know if that matters or not. Anyhow, I needed soem new computer for the 4C computer that was under the drivers seat and they replaced that for me. Beyond that, the car was fine and never had any issues.
Each case is so very unique it would be hard to say, I just hope that they are able to either get you to a place where you feel comfortable with getting the car back or just replacing it.
Good luck!

The original poster would have had to have the water up to about the top of the center console to submerge that.

Re: (Needsdecaf)

Please do not flame me... but I thought the thing under the seat was an amp or something...
Anyways... yeah, like I said... there was only about 2 inches of water on the floor and the water from outside came to about half way up the wheels barely covering the volvo logo on the wheels. I really do not understand why it could be totaled.
Is there a difference between the 04 and the 07 in computer placement?
sorry but I am a real noob when it comes to this stuff... I just know how to drive it
edit:
ok so water to the red line...
http://gallery.me.com/arges1337#100002/side-2

IIRC, the component under the passenger seat is the yaw sensor for the anti-skid system; if it got wet it's fried, hence the anti-skid warning message.

Re: (Needsdecaf)

thank you Needsdecaf. This makes more sense since those parts are the ones that were underwater... assuming the accelerometers are at about fog light height or maybe a little higher.
Thanks everyone for all the input

Judging by the line, they shouldn't have gotten wet.
