Hello,
I am in the process of modifying my '89 245 to accommodate a high wattage stereo system. I currently have 2 high output alternators, one of which is operating on its own 19v circuit. I am looking to install a custom battery tray to fit a battery 12.09" (30.7cm) long, 6.65" (16.9cm) wide, 8.31" (21.1cm) tall.

I think the stock airbox is taking up a bit to much space for me to comfortably install the new battery / tray. In addition I will be adding a lot of extra weight, so if I can pick up 1 or 2hp it would be nice.
What do you recommend for a new air intake system that will:
1) give me the most room from driver side fender to the radiator
2) not negatively effect performance/idling (hoping for a little extra power if possible)

Thank you for any help!

Welcome back to Swedespeed, Joe89 - it has been a while...

Looking at this pic on your stereo build...

...it appears you are still running the stock air box and pre-heat hose setup.

Does your location have smog inspection for this car?

Whatever - just be sure any mods can be easily reversed.

You can get a cheapo cold air intake for this car then modify the cheapo's intake hose to replace the existing connection between the fresh air box and mass air meter. Remove the existing fresh air box, snorkle and preheat hose(s) then make up some adapters to hold down the new battery. Another option might be to use an Optima battery that would direct-fit into the existing battery hold-down but still be rated high enough to power your orchestra.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Thanks.

Could you link me to an example of a cold air intake that would fit the bill? I have additional batteries in the rear which are 16v, and I am trying to get away with only one large 12v battery up front so I do not have to run 12v power to the rear. I think I would be better off with more AH than the Optima Yellow Top. I will be using one of these.. http://4xspower.com/shop/d-series/d2700/

Once I've made more progress on the car, I will start a thread to show you gents a photo gallery of my work. Thank you for the prompt reply and solid advice, George.

Best,
Joe

The stock 240 cold air box flows as well as and often better than any aftermarket jobs unless you're willing to build a racing airbox system with the intake outside of the engine compartment. If you build a system with the intake inside the engine compartment you'll wind up losing h.p., not gaining it.
