As many on this site have noted, an important part of whether you have a really plesant "R" experience or not depends heavily on the after sales service your dealer provides. I have read a few horror stories on here, conversely along with seeing that some of our regularly posting Volvo dealer reps who know how to do it right, make ppl very happy (those lucky enough to live close enough to get to them).
I did not know what to anticipate when my "check engine" light came on yesterday and I had to call to schedule an appointment.
I was helped by the actual service manager, Brian Stroik, at the dealer where I got my R. He listened to everything I was explaining and answered all of my "niggly, obssesed, car nut" questions very professionally. He was able to help me with the software tweak for the pegged temp gauge, replaced a defective wheel center cap (something only I would notice ), installed some Volvo accessories I did not even purchase from him for a VERY reasonable price, and diagnosed and replaced a defective LDP (Leak Detection Pump) from a part in stock ... the source of my check engine light, all while I waited Three thumbs up !
I am going in to have my defective HU-850 head unit I posted about replaced with a new one next week, and actually look forward to returning.
Anybody in the metro-Detroit area, I would highly recommend you give Dwyer first shot at new car sales or as your service center. We have 3 Volvo dealers in close proximity (as opposed to some ppl on here driving for hours to thier nearest place). I have visted all 3, but have to say I have really been impressed with everyone I have had to deal with at Dwyer. Sales, Service, and "R" experience are top notch .

Re: First "R" service experience (Quick Brick)

Congratulations on finding a great service department.
Wow, I need a dealer like that here in the Seattle area... I am currently R-less while my car spends its fourth night in the shop awaiting parts. I'm told that I shouldn't expect to the car until Monday at the earliest. Each day they order more parts because what started as a simple swap of the shifter cable "keeps growing". I don't know what that means, but let's just say I'm worried . All of this while my two most critical issues (the gauge lighting and the clunky suspension) have been dismissed by the service department as "normal" and unrepairable.
The icing on the cake for me came five minutes after they finished telling me that the gauge lighting is supposed to be bright in one display and dim in the other, when I was upgraded from an S40 loaner to an S60. Guess what, nice even backlighting on both displays.

Re: First "R" service experience (RainyS60R)

This also seems to be a "mod friendly" dealership, as I spoke to Brian about possibly installing some Porterfield brake pads in the near future. While he warned me about some of the typical things that can go wrong with aftermarket pads (warping, pre-mature rotor wear, etc), he didn't have any problem installing them if I wanted.
One other thing to note. They have a specific tech they use for almost all of the "R" work in the dealership. This gives me an even higher level of confidence that the work will be performed correctly ... the first time.
Car operated flawlessly on the way to work this morning .
