I was told by one of my mechanics to wait until at least 10,000 miles on it to start synthetic and he specifically stated that the R needed to wait longer than other Volvos. I know others may disagree but just passing on what I was told, but this guy seemed very informed about the R's which has not been the norm for me.

The wider range oils have more additives that tend to break down faster than a narrower range oil.
I use 10/30 Mobil 1 year round. It's a rare occasion that temps fall below -4F and even if they did, M1 pours to somewhere around -40F so not much worry IMO. We're more apt to break the 86F threshold of 5/30.

Re: first oil change (MagoonR)

I'm with you on 10W30, MagoonR. 5W30 is just a bit too thin for a turbo motor in the summer. Better film strength and higher oil pressure in stop-and-go traffic with a 10W30.

Re: first oil change (row)

So what's the consensus on after the first few oil changes? Can the R go safely for 7500 miles (as recommended in the manual) on a good fully synthetic oil? I plan to use M1 10W-30 at my first change soon...I've got about 1800 miles on my car now. Then I'll get the free 7500 mile service on volvo's dime and change oil again. But then I would plan to use M1 10W-30 extended life (or something like that) every 7500 miles.

After all, good oil is a high heat turbo's best friend.

Re: first oil change (MagoonR)

So my question is that what benefits do you get by changing the oil more frequently after the first few changes than what's recommended by the manual?

Therefore, they will recommend a minimum service requirement which may or may not be the best thing for the longevity of the vehicle but will get you through the warranty period.
Oil breaks down over time though less so with the synthetics. Therefore, it is not a good idea to push drain intervals beyond a reasonable period. Depending on who you ask, that period is subjective of course. In my case, every 3750 miles is about 6 months so that is my comfort zone. IMO, a few extra bucks to provide added protection is worth it. You may think that it's throwing away $$$$ but I am sure that the next owner will appreciate my care.
On a side note, do you really believe that BMW 15,000 mile intervals make sense; especially on the initial factory fill?
