Hi folks,
I have a question regarding VINs.
Where can I find out how to decode a VIN for a 1978 245
Carfax is no help. Theirs only goes back to 1981 which seems to be the case everywhere I have looked so far.
I guess the governing bodies(whomever they were) mandated the VIN rules in 1981.
Aargh.
Any advice will be muchly appreciated.
I will have more questions in the future, I dunno if this is the right board or not. I figured I may as well start here...
Von Chops

Re: Figuring out/Decoding Pre-1981 VIN's (VONCHOPSTEIN)

You're correct. A lot of the Volvo VINs from that vintage are actaully one digit short -- I found this out when purchasing my 1978 245 last year.

If it's where your location is listed (Boston) the real big thing to look for (even ignoring all other issues) is rust. Beat on the car underneath with a hammer, look as well as you can underneath for any sign of it. That's the problem I'm dealing with (and have been dealing with for the last year and some) with my 1978.
http://www.vlvworld.com/VIN/VIN75-80.htm ought to have some information for you on the VIN number issue, though.
Hope this helps!

'Rix
Thanks for the link, It seems to be more in depth.
I appreciate it. Also, thanks for the head's up on the rust issue.
You don't know how many times I have had rust eain on me during my under car inspections. I have gone through several pairs of proctective eyewear over the years. I pick through with a fine tooth comb,
How's your '78 runnin'? Have you done any upgrades or modifications?
Von Chops

the third link was designed to tell you where you car was made. it is my opinion that the ones made in sweden are just a little bit better then the others, although i have no proof whatsoever.
enjoy the volvo, and if you take off undercoating, make sure to do something about exposed metal. this seems to be the best solution.
http://www.por15.com/

Re: Figuring out/Decoding Pre-1981 VIN's (VONCHOPSTEIN)

It runs like a top, mechanically it's probably better off than my 1987 245. Haven't done any mods or anything yet, really just getting it off the ground. Just about done dealing with the rust issues, and everything cosmetic (might get it repainted as the paint is oxidizing). It's kinda funny too, the PO put a 2.5" dual outlet exhaust system on it and it sounds hilarious. Not sure I want to keep it that way yet
And yes, gotta agree, POR-15 is the way to go! Used up a can on all the sheet metal I threw at it for rust repair, gotta order more soon. POR-15!!
