Okay, I saw this set of black fender flares on Jared's car from IPD. They look pretty cool, adding sort of an XC look to the car, plus our 245 has a bit of a dent in the oen rear flare where the previous owner sideswiped something. I've found a source at...
http://www.exoticwooddash.com/fenvolvo.htm
Anyone have any experience with these. While I think the chrome looks a little... not my taste, the black looks like it has potential.
They also have dash kits. I'm not big on serious dash kits, but I think the 240 would look good with accents in that trim strip that runs the length of the dash. I'm wondering what their aluminum kit might look like. It says simulation aluminum, and I'm not to sure what that means.

The 240 Classic had wood where the black/chrome trim piece runs along the dash. For the aluminum look, just go to Home Depot and buy aluminum tape for duct work and cover the black peices. It may look good.

I thought about the Aluminum tape, but getting it to crimp right around holes like those for the vent control wheels makes me wonder how well it would work. I wonder if you heat it if it shrinks to fit to a degree. That might work.
I also thought about simply trying to paint the black strips in a silver finish. We'll see, I'm not too keen on simlulated aluminum. I've seen samples of those before, and unless it is more realistic than the one I've seen, I'm concerned of how it would look.

I thought about aluminum and paint too, then I remembered that the stock dash looks pretty good. Maybe I'll pick up the pieces from a boneyard donor and see how it looks.
My pet peeve is the wood aftermarket dash kits. They never look good. The reason is because you have to adhere them on top of the regular dash. Everything looks out of whack after that. And then they compensate by beveling the wood. Ugh!
However, for the 240, I could pretty easily reproduce the dash trim in solid wood (rather than veneer.) Then one could choose from any wood. Joshua Tree Wood Trim sells real aluminum dash kits. Unfortunatly they don't have any for 240s. They do have dash kits in simmulated aluminum, walnut, rosewood, burlwood, black&blue&red&yellow carbon fiber.
SAM has fake wood and fake carbon

I like the real aluminum but it is kind of pricy. $443 for my Nissan

For your viewing pleasure, here's a page of pictures of a 240 Classic (pics came from an ebay auction, interior shows the wood trim):
1993 240 Classic
I like the dash kits that SAM sells. "Briarwood look", "Carbon Fibre look", or "Aluminum look". Only 628.-SEK (about $60 before shipping).
George, I've considered black plastic flares too. I grabbed one from an A1 Rabbit in a junkyard ($5) and tested it on a 240 that was nearby and it conformed to the front fender quite well. The rear 240 fender is a little flatter, but I bet it could be made to work. I don't know what year the VW was, but I got the front flare (would have got both fronts, but other side was crushed). Most of the other VW's I've seen had flares that ended at the side moulding, so they wouldn't work.
Are you planning to go to the VW GTG on Saturday in Herndon? I'm planning to stop by for a little while since I live so close.

I don't know about aluminum-look trim that shrinks to fit, but if you want to go with a carbon-look, there are a number of places that can supply you with sheets of stuff to do just that. I've thought about it a lot, but I'm just not that motivated - the stock dash looks good, and it's becoming more rare all the time!

That Classic setup is the one I am shooting for, though I'd prefer an aluminum look. I wonder if I could have it nickel plated or something, or how that might look? I'm a big fan of satin silver.
The wood looks cool also, but I'm very sweet on silver.
That's a good idea about picking up some boneyard pieces first to test the waters. I'll have to do that.
Michael, I'm not going to the GTG. We have a BUNCH of people in town this weekend for a dinner party and I'll be busy with that all weekend. It'd be cool to get together for something soon though. I don't think I've had a chance to bring my 245 to any DC GTGs yet.

Maybe just the usual group getting together in a few weeks, or something like that.
I'd definitely like to check out the 245. Would you be interested in a set of used IPD sway bars? I'll have a 25mm front bar and a 22mm rear bar available in about a month or more. Price will be much less than IPD if you're interested. No need to make a final decision now, however.

I was thinking of maybe trying to get a GTG going for the Volvo Ocean Race Weekend in Baltimore. I thought we could try to get an event going up that way, possibly near Baltimore or Annapolis (perhaps at Annapolis Volvo Subaru). I know Volvo is having their cars down at the VCOA Event in FL which I'm just not going to have the time or the money to attend, but perhaps some sort of show and shine at Annapolis Volvo or nearby might be in order.
I'll let you guys know. We should get together sooner than that. If Rob doesn't mind, we could meet up at his garage again, or we can try to set something up where we meet up with some of those Baltimore guys. That might actually be the way to go. I know a good Park N Ride lot right off of Route 32 that's about half way between DC and Baltimore where we could meet, and it's near Columbia so we could find plenty of places to stop and grab lunch.
Or we could check out Auto Skandia or Martin Motorsport in VA. IPD told me that Auto Skandia bought one of their ex-project cars. Maybe we could check that out at the same time.
The last option, and maybe the most interesting, would be to go down to Brandywine Auto Salvage's two locations in PG county. The older location has a ton of stuff, and the newer location has a couple 240s to choose from.

This weekend is bad for me, but I'd be up for it over one of the next couple of weekends. Let's move planning that though over to Events and Gatherings and see if more people are interested.
The Baltimore port for Volvo Ocean Race starts April 26 (Friday) and goes through that weekend. I'll call my buddy at Annapolis Volvo to see if they might be game for something. I'll post news on that also in the E&G Forum.
