Nope Jim you are quite correct, at least the last time I checked about a year ago. If you have an oil related issue with your car, Volvo can (and likely would) deny you warranty because of the oil. With that said, it is excellent oil, but just for the fact that Volvo could mess with you, I'd use Mobile 1 instead.

No, they don't carry the starburst. That requires a big payment to API. But they claim to exceed SL. Dave at RL knows his oil.

More importantly, even as of '06, Volvo only requires that the oil meet SL, GL-3 OR A1/B1. I see no starburst or API certification requirement in the '06 online manual, just the donut, which is not certification.

They also "recommend" Castrol (and with the Castrol "logo"), but we know what that's all about. Are they going to deny me because I used M1?

If they were to deny warranty coverage based solely on the issue that RL didn't carry a certification starburst, I'd happily litigate that one with them. Yet they'll honor a claim on "certified" 5W-30 Supertech conventional changed every 7,500?

Considering how relaxed Volvo is compared to some other European makes in setting oil specifications, I don't think they have much basis to be denying claims based on oil selection.

Fact is, for this high strung turbo engine, I can think of no better oil than RL. All that POE is just tailor made for it.

And . . . API claims that a number of certified oils did NOT meet standards in random test sampling They won't name names, but . . .

I certainly hope not since that's what my dealer put in my car during my last visit when I requested synthetic for the oil change.

Ah, that would be the Volvo $88 oil change? Hope you brought your own M1 for them to use and saved a few bucks.

I know Mobil 1 would suffice, but I've been using this since 2000 miles.

with the xtra boost and all

Ditto - made the switch from M1 to Redline based upon research on SS specific to the R.

Actually, they charged me $45. I didn't have time to pick up the M1 beforehand so I had to eat the cost. Thought it was a fair complete rip-off! lol

P.S. Hey Derek, I saw 2 Ti Grey Rs in the Walmart parking lot (in front of Jani - I was picking up dinner) last week. I think one had a sport kit. The other was a wagon. Wasn't you, was it?
