FCP Euro OW-20 vs Castrol OW-20 for warranty.

Silly question for everybody.

I'm still under my CPO warranty which expires later this year but the Volvo dealership I usually go to is a bit far for me to travel and they just raised prices a fair amount.

I had the piston ring repair done about a year ago and know I need to change oil with the OW-20 Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE spec. The first oil change after getting my piston rings repaired was with the Volvo dealership.

Do I need to have Castrol OW-20 VCC RBS0-2AE oil to keep my CPO warranty? The service bulletin says that I have to use Castrol but this doesn't seem correct.

"Maintenance or repairs on all model year vehicles with VEP4 2.0L engines requiring the replacement of engine oil must be performed using only Castrol EDGE Pro V 0W-20 oil. As of April 1, 2020, Volvo will not pay any oil maintenance or repairs claims that are performed without using Castrol EDGE Professional V 0W-20 oil. "

I was going to buy the FCP liqui moly oil which meets the VCC RBS0-2AE spec and have it changed at the local independent shop which is much cheaper and closer. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I'm pretty sure this was covered on one of the many oil threads but I can't find it. I believe it's still defaulting on your user manual, which is requiring the Volvo spec oil, with Castrol being recommended. I'd call the dealer to be sure though.

If you read that wording several times, it's very weird. It seems to be a directive to Volvo service centers, not the customers. I interpret it as: Volvo will not reimburse the dealer for oil related warranty work unless the dealer uses 0W20 Professional V. Some dealers were still using the 5W30 Professional V and I imagine the dealer would eat the warranty cost if they still used it against this update.

Volvo now requires dealers to use the Castrol oil meeting the RBSO-2AE specification and will not reimburse them if they use any other oil in the Drive-E engines. I believe that this policy was put in place to get most Drive-E engines on what Volvo now considers to be the correct oil in the US market. I don't think they are saying that the car's warranty would be void if other brands of oil are used provided they meet the RBSO-2AE spec. Volvo is simply not going to reimburse their dealers for anything other that the Castrol Professional RBS0-2AE product.

You can use any oil that meets the Volvo RBSO-2AE specification. You are not limited as to which brand of oil you use provided it meets that specification.

If you're following the manual with updates on the correct oil then Volvo would have a hard legal time denying a warranty. Customers are not generally given access to service bulletins, so I would agree, as a non legal expert on the internet, that it is worded and intended for dealerships.

Thanks a lot everybody. I'll just go back to the dealer I've been going to to avoid any trouble and then likely do the liqui moly once I'm out of warranty.

I am taking a similar approach with my CPO car, the dealer is doing every oil change. I am giving them zero wiggle room when it comes to warranty issues. I know that legally they can't make me do this, but given that oil changes are about twice a year it seems worth it to avoid time wasting disputes.

I just ordered an oil service kit from FCP of Liquimoly. Better quality oil and cheaper than Castrol.

Not sure about quality difference, but using Volvo spec Castrol or Liquimoly is approved per the user manual. And they're both cheaper than an oil change at the dealer
