This is getting a bit annoying, my windshield has LOTS of little chips missing to the point now where it's starting to interfere with outward vision, not really impeading it but countless distractions.
The car is only two years old, I would expect better longevity out of this type of part. Is there a legitimate warranty claim for this? Is there an expected life span on parts like this? One would assume that if not physically broken by something that a windshield would last the life of the car.
Any thoughts?

Your best way to get a new windshield free (that's if you have good insurance) is to
get a large stone chip (hint, a falling rock) in it

Re: Faulty windshield (JRL)

I'd be more interested in Volvo standing behind what seems like a crappy part. An important crappy part at that.

You've got to be kidding, I mean I'm no defender of Volvo on many things, but your claiming you have a defective windshield because after two years of driving its pitted?
Look, I have had many a BMW that if I got 8 months without looking like a star cluster I would be happy. European cars have softer glass than domestics that is a fact. A friend of mine owns a glass supplier and said it started about 8 years ago.
Like Jim said, take a hammer but call and make sure it's covered. My insurance does not ( USAA)

Doubtful.
Most ALL Euro glass is made by Sekurit, Pitting CRAP for the last 40 years.
US glass is much better

My replacement windshield is even softer than my original. One year and its shot vs two years for the original. oclv

Re: Faulty windshield (vintagemilano)

I was cleaning my windshield this weekend and noticed the same thing, very soft glass or something -- just seems like the chips are a bit excessive for just 5,000 miles, especially since there very little snow prep this winter (flying salt chips, etc)

But the windshields on both of my Rs were made in Italy.
Most Europeans, including Volvo, are notorious for soft windshields.
Conversely, the PPG replacement on my '97 is wearing like armor.

USAA has replaced three windshields for me over the years (not on the R, at least yet) as well as the driver's side front on the R and numerous other side windows on other cars(at least 4-5). Never cost me a cent.

yea man, i got two free windshields a year with my insurance, check it out then maybe a large metallic object will freakishly hit your windshield causing a large crack or chip
replacement only takes a couple hours, drop the car off and pick it up after work, best solution... i don't even know if there is such a thing as a "faulty" windshield, it's glass a.k.a. it breaks, especially with highway driving
friggin trucks kicking up rocks and debris
