My ignition key has been getting stuck in my 99 S70 Automatic. The ignition switch seems not to be turning all the way off, so the key won't come out. I have to restart the car, change from drive to park a few times, make sure the steering wheel is straight & after a few tries, the key comes out. WD 40 didn't help. Is this a common problem? If the switch is bad, is this an expensive job to fix? The car has 165k on the clock, so I've become accustomed to repairs "here & there".
Thanks for any help.

Re: Faulty Ignition Switch (Taleof2Bricks)

Look to the right of your shift lever... there should be a button labeled "shiftlock override" there. As I understand things, so you can release the transmission for towing or pushing. However, I believe the same mechanism keeps your key in the ignition until your car is in park. Try using that to release your key (after turning off the engine / putting the transmission in park / setting the brake / etc. of course) -- I think if you have the car in park, and push down on this button, it will let you rotate the ignition the rest of the way to the "off" position.
I thought I'd seen posts about part of this mechanism failing, and how to repair it, but I can't find them at the moment. Perhaps some of the more experienced forum members will be able to provide more information than I can, but at least this might let you get the key out of the ignition today in the meantime!

Re: Faulty Ignition Switch (kageryu)

Thanks for the tip.
I talked to a private Volvo mechanic & he told me rather than the ignition, it might be the shift lever. The "button" at the front underside of the shift lever does seem to be sticking. He told me to pull it out & that should solve the prob temporarily. I tried your method also, and one or the other method worked & I was able to get my key out. I ordered a new shift lever and will see if that solves the problem long term.
Thanks again & best regards (any other suggestions still welcome!)

Oh wish i had gotten here sooner. It's not your gear selector microswitch going bad which would require you to press the shiftlock override to get out of gear. It is like you said probably that the shift button is sticking. Very common problem (I have it too). If you already ordered a new shift knob that will probably fix it but a couple of temporary fixes are spraying some lube inside the shifter, and also removing the center console and spraying compressed air on the line that goes into the shift lever. That gets gummed up over time.

Thanks for the info....I sprayed some WD40 on the shift button & after toggling it for a bit, presto, it freed up. Funny, how over time, you don't realize how it used to feel, & how sticky it has been lately. I'm stopping by the mechanic today & may ask him to hold the part for a week or so. If no probs I'll ask him to return it.
Thanks again

the WD-40 is only a temp fix but you can keep doing it. I would recommend doing the compressed air trick. If you want directions on how to remove the console just ask. It's very simple...only two bolts. Oh and while you've got compressed air go ahead and spray the sensor for your climate control which is located just to the right of the ignition switch. It's good to spray that out every so often

Re: (Big Will)

Thanks, how do you remove the console...? I tried before, but I can't seem to find the bolts.
My shifter lights have been out for a while & when its open, can I get at those, too? If so, are the bulbs something I can get over the counter or are they Volvo parts?
If not, no big deal, my main concern is with the shifter....
thanks again...
