So i love the integration of the factory navigation into the dash, how ever on a car that is not equipped with it from the factory, i certainly can't justify its purchase.

So to satisfy my needs i took on a little project :D

03 S80 Navigation screen ($60)
5" Garmin Nuvi 1450 ($129)
some switches and wire, solder, and shrink tubing ($25)
New dash grill and mounting bracket ($50)

Little bit of time and patience and we are off to a good start:

I completely gutted the factory screen down to just the motor:

got that working on its own:

Gutted the garmin down to its skivvies

I'll get the videos working, for some reason they display an error.

Grill and mounting bracket come tomorrow, and then off to the dash for install

Stay tuned:

Correct me if I am wrong, but so far you bought a NAV screen, removed the actual screen, installed the Garmin in to the screen bezel?

Do you plan on having it raise and lower, or will it always stay up?

the motor is completely hooked up, raises and descends with the cars power on or off, but additionally can be raised without power on in the car, and can be lowered while driving.

I also routed the audio output of the garmin, into the Volvo dash speaker so it has it own independent source.

To show the motor working was the whole reason i was trying to upload video.

You do nice work, a bit of insanity..... but nice work
Garmin 650, got it for free, stick on windshield, works the same (I never use them anyway, I have 3 GPS units in my drawer now).

Wrapped up the bezels of 2.0 today. I preferred the styling and width of the 03+ bezel (widescreen).

Got on the laser cutter to create these. 5.1 and 4.3 inch Garmin Bezels for retrofitting :D.

Should be wrapping this project up completely on Wednesday now that everything is in.

enjoy

Great work yet again! You are a roll with all these goodies for your VR!

I would like like to do this with the new garmin Nuvi 765, your thoughts?

Thanks Peter. The car will be in a much better state come the end of the week :D

The smaller of the two bezels was actually designed for the Nuvi 765. So while i am doing my 1450, i am also doing another for the 765 as a simultaneous project for an XC90.

The installs will be a little bit different.

the 1450 has traffic built into the USB cable. while the 765 has a dock with its own multi pin traffic cable out. So a windshield dock is being retrofitted into that particular housing. It will look great though!

Looks good. Won't it be hard to touch the screen for navigation?
