I wanna have my local muffler shop fab. me up a custom 3" exhaust system. So far I have picked out- 2 Dynomax Bullets (P/N: 24219) to be used as resonators and 1 Magnaflow Muffler (P/N: 14219 or 14229). Basically I want it to flow as much as the Evolve & Svenske but be as quiet as an EST/Jetex ect....

What is your opinion on the parts I have selected and "guesstimates" on sound level??

1 resonator is more than enough - 2 may create too much back pressure anyway detracting most of the benefit of a 3" system.

R Kelly did a great thread with sound clips of the various exhaust options & I do not recall the Jetex as "quiet"

Re: Fabbing up Custom Exhaust..... (bschurr)

Jetex is extremely quiet from the clips I have heard, I hear more "turbo" than "engine noise". Sounds almost stock.

I don't see how resonators would create too much back-pressure....they are straight through design and have 0 baffles and are 3" the whole way through.....if resonators create back-pressure, people would be seeing performance gains from doing JRL's Mod, it was stated that it is purely a sound mod and there is no performance gain to be had.

More turbo than enigne noise
I have EST cat-back (basically the same parts as Jetex) and I would NOT say it "sounds almost stock" but keep in mind I also have a 3" Ferrita DP. Have a listen to my clip and you be the judge (a subwoofer helps do this clip justice)

In this clip from "R" Kelly...... IwantaS60R's Jetex Exterior
http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/v......on my 5.1ch, yes it is quite bassy, but I can hear just as much if not more turbo spool than engine noise.....maybe like you said with the 3" DP it makes an audible difference (I know it does) and it is not stated if there are any mods other than the exhaust.

To me though, the above Jetex clip is quiet.... I'm not saying Evolve and SvR are loud, but they are just louder than what I am going for.

In my ricer days I had a Civic with STRAIGHT 2.5" exhaust (4-1 header, no cat, no res, no muffler) THAT WAS FRIGGIN LOUD!!
Sounded like a 2-stroke dirtbike...but I was young and dumb and it was loud so I was happy.

I want the highest flowing setup (whether I gotta make it up or buy a system) but the lowest sound level possible.

That link seems broken, did you test it?

I agree that the EST and Jetex are on the quiet side but certainly more gutsy sounding than the stock setup. I can't say I hear the turbo spooing from outside but I do hear it a bit more from inside since adding the new exhaust. I assume hearing the turbo is more a function of the 3" DP than the cat-back though. Nonehteless for me it's just right at this stage in life.

ps. I used to have a '94 Civic Si 5MT, didn't rice it up but I did drive for 2 weeks with a big hole in the exhaust right after the cat and yeah that was bloody loud and FUN at WOT!

We have a local mennonite shop around here that does work DIRT cheap. If you want a custom 3" from DP back, including muffler, it would be less than $200. I think I paid $150 when I had it done to my saab.

not a performance shop, but they do bring in the performance crowd because of their dirt cheap labor. and their material isn't cheap crap either...the system i had them put on the saab was still in great condition when i sold it 4 years after the work was done.

You should see the custom exhaust that can be fabricated for the horse and buggy. OMG.....it rocks.

It can probably beat an M3 to boot.

try the 3" piping with just the magnaflow first. personaly I would go Borla but that is just me. If it is too loud then add resonater(s). resonator(s) will be tricky due to clearance and trying to avoid that rain howling you will most likely get with a resonator.

Hmm, do you have the name of this shop? I need to go to Wyomissing next month and might as well go ahead and do the deed while over there. Since I'll be close...it could be interesting!

Re: (phuz)

On my 3" turbo back I used 1 oval and 1 round borla xr-1sportsman racing mufflers. Application from a different car, but same motor basically and it sounds wonderful.

Pic was taken before 2nd muffler was installed. With out the round muffler the car sounded like a truck with open headers...

Yea, I know all the guys at my local Meinke...they've always done my custom exhausts (so many that it's on a do now and pay later basis) so I know it'll cost almost nothing to get done. The reason for going with the resonators I want to, is because they don't really stick out "that" much from the actual piping, they are a slim design. I guess I'll order up the muffler and 1 res. and give it a shot and see how loud or quiet it is and go from there

LTA- The link I posted is from "R" Kelly's exhaust post, I guess maybe you gotta go direct to it??

gdogg- The res. I wanna use doesn't have that "U" baffle in it, it's just straight though all the wayyyy.

Borla is a superior name but either will work. I think most people that do that sort of thing would prefer the borla but it is slightly more $$$
Indeed, but you can find good prices on them on ebay. One note about the mufflers, the oval muffler didn't have a baffle, it's just a straight through muffler.

Well, here are some videos of the car with just the one oval straight through muffler on. The car was way too loud and the round resonator help a lot....
