extra key with fobb

does one have to go to a volvo dealer to get an extra key with fobb made? I have a 2001 xc70, just bought used and only have one key which i plan to lose in the next year or so. any suggestions? thanks ,carl

The key is about $80 and the programming is $50ish, depending on the dealer.

The fob is also a dealer part as well - DO NOT get one from Ebay, they will not work!

1.) Yes the dealers order the keys from volvo with your key code they are laser cut. If they are ordered by 3:00pm pacific time they will arrive the next day. The cost of the key is $55.95. then they have to program the key to the vehicle with a software. The cost of the software is $32.40. Plus any labor charge the dealership will have, usually is 1/2 hour.

2.)The dealers should stock the keyless entry remote. The cost of the remote is $94.86 and that will have to be programmed with a seperate software $32.40. And the dealer may include the labor with the 1/2 on the key or may chage another 1/2 hour to program the remote.

I was quoted $195.00 to MATE the key/remote combo to the car. I purchased the key from them, & the remote off e-bay. I was expecting $50-75.00 but this is outrageous

I guess i'll eventually end up spending the cash, but this kind of garbage is turning me against teh Marque.

They have me by the short hairs! Can't find an indy with the proper hardware to do it, & there is only one other dealer in town. Going to check w them, but expect pretty much the same result. I know the software is ~$25.00 which is BS, but I accept that, but $150.00 to plug it into the computer for 10min is just an old fashoned raping!
