I wonder if I should have mine reroute back to the exhaust, it's getting kinda loud.

no, this sounds like i have open exhaust, and that's what it is exactly...

What length pipe U use on the wg?
All the way to the back or short free to air in the engine room?'
Isn't there space to join the exhaust in the cat. area?

It's an almost 2 ft long pipe, it's not all the way back...it's going downward in the same fashion as the exhaust dp and with the outlet aim at the floor. There's a place I can reroute it back to the dp instead of the cat area since I have different flange there for me to swap out straight pipe and cat.

It's not the matter of if it's doable or not, it's the matter if I should do it.

Well, depends on how you want to maintain the sleeper mode of the car http://********************/smile/emwink.gif
I think to much noise is not cool, a deep sound is OK.

Re: External Wastegate dump pipe (Johann)

Yeah, I guess I still want that sleeper effect.

I think this is what I'm going to do....get the car tuned THEN weld those pipes together. I definitely don't think I can live with that kinda noise.

Now I wonder if I need to have the pipe go into the dp before the first O2 sensor or it doesn't matter....

Re: External Wastegate dump pipe (The_one_n_only)

Pfeww, good question.
Normally I would say before the sensor because it has to monitor all the output.
I don't know if a partial exhaust flow represents all.
The other thing is that if you have to remount the cat for emissions how will the wg pipe be connected.
I think best would be to let is run straight (horizontal) in to the exhaust just before where the cat normally would be to maintain the exhaust flow, I think this way you create the least turbulence in the exhaust itself and the gas has probably cooled down enough to maintain it's speed but I am not an exhaust expert http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif
Both gas flows have to join, not cross each other.
I think the books say that further back is better but for emissions it doesn't give you that much room to work with.

Re: External Wastegate dump pipe (Johann)

Stupid me, the first sensor is just after the turbine where the DP bends down isn't it?
OK, phoned RICA for you.
Just leave the sensor in the main stream after the turbo where it propably sit right now and then it's OK.
Since you have a modified ECU and piggybag I don't know which other options you have installed with that but the second sensor, if there is any, must read a dampened value of the first sensor.
This is what he told me but don't ask what it means.

For Yannis,

RICA checked the MY2003 ECU and it says ME7.0.1 which is the same as the MY2002.
Software is different.
Just for the record.

Probably not, they said it doesn't matter, but they are making the work sounds ridiculously tough...like they will need to take the downpipe off to do the welding...and other tasks involvoed.

The pipe is not connected, it's dumping air directly to the atmosphere. I was thinking about the same thing. Since now I do have my "test pipe" out, maybe I'll make a very smooth "Y" joint on that pipe for this wastegate pipe on that "test pipe" I have. Then when I do need to use the cat, it will be running with a version that I have now. I know this probably doesn't make any sense for the emission, but this is more or less for my convenience.

And I will try to make that Y joint as smooth and subtle as possible to ensure the least turbulence. I don't think horizontally intersection will be a good idea.

Yup, so almost no way to go back to intersect before the first O2 sensor. My 2nd O2 sensor is supposedly disable, but I still get check engine light when that sensor is bad.

I think I will just wait until the main tuner is back and ask him about this. The worst case, I'll just take it to a different shop and have them work on the welding.

I don't know where the wastegate is situated but looking at the amount of space I guess it is next to the turbine just after the DP.

Tried to make a photoshop situation.
This is the S60 DP, I know they are different http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif

Re: External Wastegate dump pipe (Johann)

LoL!~! Thanks for the picture. No, my downpipe is much simpler looking than yours. In fact from what I can see, it is a very straightforward and simple job, not sure why they are making a big deal. I know the alignment will be a bit troublesome but I don't see why they can't tackle this whole thing under an hour.

Make the extension..make sure extension will meet with the dp nicely..then......wait...yeah, to cut a hole and stuff could be very troublesome. We'll see. http://********************/smile/emwink.gif

Re: External Wastegate dump pipe (JRockCLS)

It's getting crowded in there http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif

The sound is fun but only for a moment.
I think when you drive the car for a few weeks like this you might not like it that much anymore.
Just connect the wastegate with a small flexible part just underneath the flexible on the main pipe, that should do it.
You are not affraid about heating up the fuel line?

Few weeks? You are a good man, we cannot even stand it for 2 days now. I will definitely reroute it, it's just silly to have loud arse exhaust Volvo. http://********************/smile/emsmilep.gif It sounds almost like a v8 w/ open exhaust.

Afraid? LoL~ Why afraid when I know it's very possible for me to burn the fuel line when I have backfire?

hehehe...that's why I'm putting the pipe back to the dp as soon as I'm done tuning next week.

Kai, the car sounds mean!!!. Holy crap, it's that a V8 http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif

It's a bit loud but once you reroute it to the DP make a new video to see the difference in sound.
Sounds sweet.
