Our factory warranty will expire on 12/31/06, and I'm not willing to take my chances post-warranty (reading Swedespeed too much I guess). I'll either sell/trade or buy an extended warranty before the end of the year.
Just got off the phone with the retailer we purchased the vehicle from and for a 2003 Volvo XC90 T6 with 39K miles, I was quoted a price of $2575 for a 5yr. extension from date of warranty purchase or 100,000 total miles. So, If I bought the warranty today it would expire on 4/15/11 or in 61K miles. This is a $200 deductible with a company called Universal Underwriters. This warranty supposedly has all the same benefits of Volvo VIP. Just wondered if anyone has had any dealings with this company and their warranty programs?

Re: Extended Warranty Prices for XC90 (dachshund2)

$2600? Hmmmm. I've got a notice in the mail to contact Volvo with regard to extending our warranty, as we're about 800 miles from 49k, which is the limit in order to qualify. If he makes the same offer, I'll have to pass. I figure $2,600 will go a fair ways towards making future repairs with regard to what would've constituted as warranty items. Given the relatively small number of complaints posted hereon, the chances of incurring more than $2600 worth of repairs over the next 5 years or 51K miles is very much not in my favor.
I'll put the $500 per year into a CD or moneymarket and at least get a tad bit of interest from it, lol.
I'd shop around. That sounds a tad expensive. I saw on this forum a Volvo dealer offering discounts on Volvo's program and the prices were not too bad. Closer to the $1800 mark for extending to 7 yrs 100K miles.
Good Luck

I've never bought an extended warranty for anything I've owned, and never regretted not doing so.

Re: Extended Warranty Prices for XC90 (1sttimevolvo)

heh - I've always thought it's kind of amusing when the salesperson tries to push the extended warranty when you are purchasing a new car. It's like on one hand they are telling you that you are purchasing a fine machine that will give you a lifetime of trouble-free transportation. But on the other hand they are saying the thing is unreliable, so you should buy more coverage.
Never got one on the Taurus or Explorer. Both lived way past 100K. Any decent machine should go past 100K without any major problems. And you still have to pay $200 per repair? Unless Volvo repairs are more pricey than I think, you are wasting your money. Don't have one on the S80. I hear about the weak GM trans, but I have kept "lousy" Ford transmissions for a long time. I wouldn't be scared off with the problems you see owners have.

A warranty is insurance. Anything mechanical can malfunction. In the case of a quality car, it is a claculated gamble (if you want to buy an extended warranty). Under your logic, the manufacturers should not offer any type of warranty (even when the car is brand new)...the darn thing should never have a problem!
Yannis

Re: Extended Warranty Prices for XC90 (GrecianVolvo)

While it's true that all mechanical parts fail, not all mechanical parts are built with the same quality. And manufacturers generally do know what's good and what's not before a car is released. I bet that Volvo had some sort of idea how reliable the ETMs really were. Ford knew about the Pinto's gas tank location, but thought it'd be easier to deal with individual lawsuits.
If a car company comes upto me and asks me to PAY them more money, I would question the mention. At least Hyundai/Kia admit their cars aren't that great and give you a long powertrain warranty. No modern machine over $30K should fall apart before 100K. It's unacceptable with over 100 years of automobile history to draw upon for reliable ideas. Then again, not all owners are built the same either.

These insurance policies are priced to make money, this is what you should consider 1st and foremost. Odds are you won'y get your full value the vast majority of the time
