Ok, the little boxes on the front & rear bumper that you can open with a coin... The book says you then insert an eyelet, etc, etc, and this helps in towing.
Can someone please explain to me how this eyelet helps in towing the car?
This is my first Volvo, so that is why I have the questions.
Thanks!

Maybe she ought to run that question past a tow professional or anyone, for that matter, that wouldn't give her such a condescending answer. Jeez.

C'mon, it is a silly question that begets a silly response. I'm sorry but this is just common sense
What would a tow hook be used for except to TOW?
(...and BTW, if you look at ALL European cars they all have them, they're designed in the bumpers, it's the law over there)

i don't want to get into a...uh...spitting? contest here. Everyone may not grasp the engineering concept at work here (present company excepted). I used to work with a old mechanic that would look at me sideways and say stuff like, "Boy, it ain't what ya say, its the way that ya say it". You know, that ol' boy was on the money.

Re: Explain the concept of the tow thingys in the bumper (margaritamama)

The older style of towing that includes chains and hooks 'can' do alot of damage to vehicles that have mostly Aluminum (like Volvo) sub frame components. The vehicles frame components are reinforced in the area of the tow eylet screw inpoint for just this purpose. The Hook and Chain also damages the plastic bumper, and front, or rear plastic lower air spoiler components. The two wheel tow also places the end of the vehivle that is left on the ground to be subject to drag while negotiating driveway and other type dips in the road. 'My' prefered tow method is to use the screw-in tow eylet - to hook a pull cable, to pull the vehicle onto a tiltback, also called (at least around here) a piggy-back tow bed truck. Being up on the back of the tow truck removes most of the possibilities for damage done to the vehicle during the retrieval and transport. If you trully like your Volvo, try not to ever let it be towed using any other method. Also - once the vehicle is deposited at it's destination - check to see that the screw in tow hook is replaced in the vehilces road kit.

Also keep track of the bumper cover. I believe they are on a tether, however - being color keyed to the vehicle paint - a replacement would probably have to be painted.

Re: Explain the concept of the tow thingys in the bumper FINALLY MY REPLY!!!!

Just finally checked in. Nice to see I got some smart-ass response first (thanks JRL) I fully expected it, after all this is the internet.
Now to set you straight:
Maybe I should've explained that I went from A BIGUM PICKEM-UP TRUCK to this Volvo, and I am used to having and seeing BIG-UM TOW-HOOKS, not the little wimpy-ass things that came with my Volvo. So THAT is why I had the question.
Don't assume because I am a woman, that I am an idiot. Ok?
That being said......... thanks for the picture of the chick with the canoe on her roof. I see the tow-hooks in some sort of action now.
I still cannot fathom how a tow-truck can tow the Volvo with the little wimpy-ass hooks and being only on 1 side of the car too. Yes, I was desiring technical explanation. Not a "smart ass, she's a chick so lets diss her comments". Re: Explain the concept of the tow thingys in the bumper (kenschel)

And.... bless you all who answered my question... I hope, kenschel, that you are correct that JRL can eventually redeem himself. I tend to be to-the-point and do not over-explain my questions, therefore leaving room for being perceived as an idiot? I have experience in two other car groups online and car clubs in the real-life since this is a car family I live in, including classics. So my questions are just that -- my questions. And I may word 'em like I'm a dumb broad, but I am just here seeking info like everyone else.

Margaritamama-
They don't actually "tow" the car with these it is just a way for them to load the car on a flatbed tow truck.

Re: Explain the concept of the tow thingys in the bumper FINALLY MY REPLY!!!! (Ognar)

Note that the owner's manual states that the towing eyelets should NOT be used to pull the vehicle onto a flatbed tow truck. The manual also mentions that the eyelets should not be used for recovering another stuck vehicle. Seems that the eyelets are only for towing/pulling a disabled vehicle (with all wheels on the ground) for a short distance... Have a look at the owner's manual for more details:
http://new.volvocars.com/owner...pg105
Re: Explain the concept of the tow thingys in the bumper FINALLY MY REPLY!!!! (lennynchris)

I thought the tow hook eyelets were more for securing the car to the deck of a ship or train or whatever during transport, not towing so much.
