I've had my XC70 for about 3 months now. I've also owned an audi A4 AWD and a subaru outback AWD.
Here is Northern Cal, the San Francisco Bay area, we seem to have more than our share of grooved pavement. The XC70 seems to be very unstable on this and also a bridge with steel mesh driving surface.
While i expect some tire instability, the volvo is much more unstable than the above mentioned cars. It almost seems as though the computer program is not performing correctly.
When I went over the bridge, the car was scaring me. The AWD was jerking the car around.
I wonder if there is a problem with the AWD programming.
Any one else experience this?

Re: Experiencing AWD instability on grooved pavement (msinn)

It's not the AWD, it's the tires and the general Volvo's suspension

Re: Experiencing AWD instability on grooved pavement (JRL)

So without upgrading to a XC70R, any recommendations to improve the suspension and/or Tires? I have to admit the tires are SUV like.

Not much.
New tires (get rid of those very unstable Scorpions) and sway bars from ipd will help a lot
No such an animal as an XC70R

this sound more like tramlining (e.g, mostly a tire issue) than something specific to the suspension, so I agree that different tires might be worth it but am skeptical that investing in new sway bars will make a difference
btw, there is a V70R, but not an XC70R

Re: Experiencing AWD instability on grooved pavement (msinn)

when motor trend did a comparison between the XC70, B9 Tribeca, Cadillac SRX, and Dodge Magnum, they mentioned the car following grooves in the pavement as well. I'm going to be driving my aunts '05 XC70 on a road trip in a couple weeks, I'll see if I notice it then. Most likely the pirellis as everyone has mentioned, but(I could definitely be wrong)it might have to do with all the power going to the front wheels under most circumstances...

Volvo's AWD system operates in fwd mode most of the time so it's probably not the system itself destabilizing your car. The tires have alot to do with what you're feeling.

NB: I've experienced this many times... it decreases considerably after a few months on the new tires. The options a few, but the handling itself doesn't really change. Also note that the following decreases when the grooves are wet or worn down

Re: (XCellent!)

Glad I saw this thread - now I know I'm not the only one feeling the wobbles! I've owned an XC90 since 11/2003 and I experience exactly the same thing. The most notable is on a steel mesh bridge, like the one between Alameda and Oakland - makes for an exciting couple hundred feet! My XC90 has the stock Michelin tires on it, so this issue is not limited to the Scorpions. Should be interesting to see if the '07 XC70 we get next month has the same handling on that bridge.

Re: (W6JHB)

I experience some wobble with my XC70 but its not disconcerting. Of course the limited funding for roads in Colorado means that we don't have many miles with those squiggly lines! I may try Yokohama's soon so it will be interesting to compare.
BTW, JHB congrats on the new XC70! You may want to check out volvoxc.com if you haven't already. They have an active XC70 forum too. Many folks participate here and there -- it's worth a visit.
73 de KA0AA

Re: (jackf)

JACKF/KA0AA - thanks for the pointer on the other forum - I'll check it out. Really looking forward to the new XC70. I like the 90 I've had since 11/2003, but I seriously do NOT like the MPG it gets.
73, Jim / W6JHB

Quote, originally posted by msinn »

Any one else experience this?

No and I5 here is heavily rutted (close to 2") concrete. I get no pulling at all. Have not been on metal grating yet but wouldn't be surprised if that is totally different.
Based on all the complaints about the Scorpions, I expected bad tires, but they don't seem that bad to me. I put max Volvo recommended pressure (36 lbs as I recall) in them, so maybe that makes some difference.
