As an Uber-Volvo enthusiast, I have never heard this story. I’m highly skeptical this is true.
I think he’s referring to a video that was going around where someone was trying to demonstrate the city safety system by walking in front of an xc60. The system was not on during the test.

Oooops.

this is at a dealership, and yes….system was turned off. Crazy how internet rumors grow out of disinformation. This has nothing to do with Volvo management and the system failing.

I do like that the xc90 has the electrical pretentioners because the car can afford to be more proactive like this. In other models with the pyrotechnic tensioners they’re more of a last resort thing.
Just went on a google deep dive around these two systems, all new to me. I see what you’re saying, even though the pyrotechnic is technically more sophisticated or newer technology, the electrical pretensioned can be used more often. Sounds like the pyrotechnic tensioner might be more effective in an actual accident though? All interesting.

That may be their reason why they have both. Electrical for positioning during possibly dangerous maneuvers and pyro for collision.

I don't think "standard" means pyrotechnic, I think it means like what's been around for decades where you slam the brakes and the belt locks up mechanically

Was this one off too?

This one was actually off and caused a bit of a scandal back then when Volvo launched this feature as a world first. Apparently they had disconnected the battery or reset it for some reason and the city safety was deactivated. Well the video is pretty demonstrative of the fail that happened…

Exactly what I was thinking, I believe you’re correct. There’s no pyro in the car, only electrical.
What he’s describing is not a pretentioner. That’s a locking reel. There are mechanical pretensioners. I know of one that involved using sudden seat movement to release a torsion bar, and another that used engine block movement to pull cables to tension the belts.

It is very true, and if you bothered to fact check before your pithy comment, you would see for yourself. But so many individuals like yourself cant be bothered,....
Please post the video of the president of Volvo being hit by a Volvo car during a demonstration. Please show it, because it doesn’t exist and never happens.

why on earth are you so hostile?!? I literally was there for the launch of auto brake at Volvo….I don’t need to scour the internet for proof. I know what happened back then…I was literally there.

WRONG, again,...
Extraordinary claims require evidence. You can’t just say “oh, it’s true and everyone knows it and I remember hearing about it so it’s true”

Find something. Since you’re claiming everyone else should be fact checking and that if they did so it would prove you right, go ahead. Find a source that isn’t that widely debunked video from the Dominican Republic.
