Just wanted to ask about how many miles I can expect to get out of the OEM turbo on a 2004 S60R. Its currently at 100k miles.
If you've had to do this, toss out some $ figures for how much to replace/rebuild.
Thanks-
Brad

It's all relative on how you drive and maintain your car. There's no one mileage per say.
Don't drive it hard 5sec after you start it and don't shut it off 5sec after you drive it hard, use synthetic oil and you'll be fine, as in you'll get as much life out of it as it's got.

OK - So we don't drive the car too hard, we do the obvious stuff to not blow up the turbo, and we use Mobil 1 synthetic.
So, that being said, about how long would one expect it to last? I assume they don't last forever....

Like I said, if you take care of it, should last a while.
I'd worry more about other things going before the turbo, such as angle gear, slave cylinder, power steering reservoir, wheel bearings, bushings, hoses, belts, etc., that sort of thing.

I've seen them go 2-300K. Also seen them go right off the Truck.
There is no crystal ball but most last as long as the vehicle.

I would say that of all the components that fail on our cars, of which there is a plentiful quantity, the turbo is not among them. Be nice to your car and it will spool for years.
I'm of the mindset that if I have a part fail on my car, my first stop to replacing it will be in the aftermarket to try and squeeze more performance out of it. That being said, I'll be on the stock turbo for quite some time...

Re: Expected mileage before turbo rebuilt/replacement? (aneurysm)

I'm in the 40k miles territory and thinking my turbo is on it's last legs...
(to the wife) .... "Hon, I'm afraid we're going to have to rent a car for a few weeks. There's a critical engine part in the family wagon that needs to go out and be "remanufactured". No, we can't just put in a new one... you know how exotic these "sweded" cars are. Every part has to be custom built, balanced, ported, polished, ceramic coated, and tested, over and over and over, late at night, on fairly new interstates.... then the driver has to be sedated for weeks at a time just to keep the horses from bolting out of the barn willy-nilly... "

{ ... don't try to pass that volvo, dude... that smurf-blue wagon has been Sweded ! }

Usually blue smoke from the tailpipe while idling and under load after engine warms up a bit.

Sometimes a screeching metallic noise under boost. Can sometimes be just at certain boost levels.
Worst case is there was a turbo noise and now the noise is gone but NO boost = seized turbo.
Not a bad job to do
