I am posting on the R side in the hopes that you guys may have a little more insite. I was at the gas station over the weekend and parked next to a jetta that was just idleing and it sounded so sweet. The driver was not around and his girlfriend was in the car so no one to ask about it.
It was a really low burbling sound that made me green with envy. What are the chances of have the V70 sound this way? Any ideas? Full cat back replacement?

Re: Exhaust Sound Envy (xman03)

ive heard a friend of mines VR6 sound real nice with just the cat back. Which engine was it? the turbo models are usually quieter. yea, a 3" downpipe and no mufflers/resonators should do the trick for the v70 lol.

Re: Exhaust Sound Envy (mpdbrown)

FWIW, my TME DP/ Exhaust combo make me the envy of no one's exhaust sound ( except for maybe Lamborghinis, Veyrons, Ferraris, Maseratis, M5s, M3s, et al.) Anyhow, they don't do it on the relative cheap like I do.
Outside, a nice little rumble at idle with a full-on growl at higher RPMs with compressor whine at no extra charge. But in the car, it's like shhhhhhh... quiet)
Dang it, there goes that stupid grin again

Custom DP back, run a magnaflow resonator in place of stock w/no muffler...

Re: Exhaust Sound Envy (Oz60R)

Not that I am that concerned but - is it legal and how loud would it be? I already have the resonater removed. Why not just replace the stock muffler with a Manaflow muffler? Seems strange to add something I have already deleted?

The resonator should cut down on some (but likely not all) of the resonance, i.e. drone, of the straight pipe. You also have to take note of which car people have that are suggesting various exhaust options. A lot of the configurations, e.g. resonator with no muffler, or high flow muffler and no resonator on a 3" pipe, might have no drone on a sedan, but will drone like crazy on a wagon.
Cheers,
J

Re: Exhaust Sound Envy (soupandspoons)

You got it spot on soup. I deleted the muffler and put in the magnaflow resonator (in stock location) to reduce resonance and the raspy sound.
http://videos.streetfire.net/v...5.htm
http://videos.streetfire.net/v...2.htm
Theres 2 videos of what it sounds like. Driveby is #1 and revving #2. Skip to 36 seconds on the 1st one, I have no video editing capabilities.

Oz...I'm just throwing this out there but do you think 2 inline resonators would make the tone a little more subdued? I have no idea when it comes to exhaust so it might be a dumb idea but I just thought I'd ask. Thanks
Evo

Re: (Evos_R)

For a turbo-charged car, I'd say these are more along the lines of sounds to be envious of...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cytTZnfpUY

IMHO, a 5 pot will always sound a bit odd compared to a good 6

Re: (Evos_R)

Evo, yeah it will definitely tone it down with 2 inline resonators... The big bambino of the exhuast would be R Kelly to answer exhaust questions... Its all personal preference in the road you want to take for the perfect tone though.

Re: Exhaust Sound Envy (brbevil)

get a dp, and then find a svenske exhaust for sale, maybe alamo autosport still has some.
when the amazing idle burble and maserati 8 cyl sound at high revs isn't worth the off-throttle drone, swap out rear res for 5x8 magnaflow muffler and you will still have the best sounding, low burbly exhaust on a volvo.
or, get a JETEX/BSR/EST and remove resonator (ala JRL mod). Not as loud or burbly, but still a very nice/sporty exhaust.

I have the SVR with the magnaflow on it and it does sound really nice and soon i will have the EST one.
To my knowledge Alamo sold off the last few back in the fall so you will have to wait until someone sells it... mine is going to MightyQ but someone has to have on they want to sell so keep an eye out for it
