During the 60,000 maintenance I carefully looked at the muffler (original). In general is not bad for 5 years in the PNW weather. But there are two spots where localized rust has penetrated the muffler outer skin.

The questions:
1. How worried should I be about this. Looks like I can still go on for 2 years or so or even longer if the rust is not progressing quickly.

2. How is that I got these holes after 5 years in a Volvo muffler and I have none (I do have some rust though) on my 12 year old Toyota Camry muffler?

I would not touch it. I have the same thing that I noticed last year and nothing happened since then.

Performance exhaust would be nice but hard to justify as a necessity on its own due to low hp/$.

I'll leave it as is and see about it in one year or so.
