Of all the things, this is the last I though would be hard to find.... I've got a '71 142E, and the exhaust is different than the non-E models. I can't find a supplier in the US. I've found a couple of people who carry "Sports Exhaust" systems, but I'm not interested in a rumbly race car - I want a classic volvo with it's classic tail pipe..... All I've been able to find are parts from Skandix which I can order from Europe with $500 shipping charges.

Does anyone know where I can get an exhaust system?

Thanks

Looks like 1) stainless exhaust that I can buy in Sweden, 2) gaskets, 3) a tail pipe. The tail pipe is good and includes a resonator as it should, but I'm still short two mufflers and the axle pipe. I'll keep searching.
Let's start over.

Look through this...

...and share the Part Numbers for each part you desire for the entire exhaust system for your '71 142E.

Thanks.

The front ones certainly last longer than the rear ones because they run hot enough even on short trips to evaporate any water in the exhaust stream. But on a short trip the exhaust condenses in the rear one and ESPECIALLY in the resonator.

My local NAPA shows that the full exhaust is available. Can't remember the price. I opted for a 90-day returnable Harbor Freight tubing bender (the captain's wheel kind) and some locally sourced SS tubing with a glass pack.

You can return the bender after using it within 90 days. After you make your buddies a few roll cages and such. :)

Time for some homework...

Please post here the Volvo Part Numbers for EVERY exhaust component that you seek...

http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/exhaust/31/

http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...system-stainless-steel-from-manifold/1000993/

Given this we can find a USA-based (honest?) supplier with the item(s) in stock and ready to ship.

Thanks.

The only part I'm still missing is the front muffler, PN 690598. I might have a lead on it through one of the local auto parts places. Everything else is on it's way from Swedish Auto Parts. Skandix doesn't have anything in the US - just the Sports Exhaust which I don't want.

Me thinks 680598 is a better number.

Still go ogling for a USA supplier - stay tuned!

It's hard to tell. I really dislike on-line businesses that won't tell you where they are physically located and won't give you a phone number to call them. Typically I won't do business with them. But, somewhat against my better judgement, I ordered a muffler and rear hanger from classic-volvo.com. I now have an inquiry into them to find out if the parts are really in stock and where they will be shipping from. As a backup, Voluparts replied to my inquiry and says they have one in stock in Atlanta.

142 newbie needs exhaust work.. center resonator is rusted and thinking of just deleting and straight piping it back to a new stock bosal muffler. Currently has the exhaust from a 73? Thoughts? Aloha

I think you have 3 options, or at least this is what I found buying mine:

1) Buy a "Sports Exhaust" from one of the many US suppliers. If you are otherwise modifying the car then the non-standard parts won't be a big deal. Also, lots of people want the rubbley zoom sounds.

2) Buy a factory-style exhaust from one of the suppliers in Europe. They are setup just like the original exhaust if you want a stock-fit. But I found the shipping was exorbitant - something like $500 to ship a $200 exhaust system.

3) Spend days trying to find a stock exhaust system one piece at a time, from one supplier at a time in the US. Many, if not most of the US suppliers buy from the European suppliers and hold stock in the US. As that stock sells down, they may or may not have what you need, and who knows when they will get more.

My car is 99% original and unmodified and I'm keeping it that way, so option 1 was out. Because of the cost and time involved in #2, I went with options 3. I don't think I bought more than 2 parts from any one supplier, and at least 50% of the suppliers who said they had parts X, in fact did not. It's a time consuming process with a lot of googling, but I finally got everything.

You didn't mention whether your car is an S or an E? Mine is an E and that makes matters worse because the exhaust is different from the S. Many of the E parts are common with the 164. If you have an S you might have an easier time of it.

The other thing I found is that the E tailpipe should include a resonator, but it doesn't appear anyone makes them. I tracked down 2 tail pipes with resonators with the correct part number and both arrived with no resonator - just a straight pipe. Neither of the suppliers could explain it, so I've thrown in the towel on that one. Again, this only applies to the E.

Good luck.

142E used a 2-1/4" pipe (bigger than S) because they were moving "a lot more" air (at least in 70 and 71... higher compression, different intake and exhaust valves, etc etc etc) definitely freer flowing exhaust, though.

When I had mine (20 years ago) I had a custom exhaust bent for mine. I deleted the resonator, and never really had the buzz problem, but then again, I was also much more after performance and not so worried about sound. Of course, I also went to 2-1/2 instead of 2-1/4 at the time...
