I took factory delivery of my 05 V70R last year. At that time you can "borrow" the Euro DVD/Map after putting a deposit for it. Currently I am thinking of taking another factory delivery of a 07 XC90V8 with Nav also. However the info is showing that the NAV cannot be used with Euro Map. Can anybody clarify this one since driving the car in Euro with Nav map is a lot of help/convenience.
Thanks,
Awdnut
Can't they download the european map while the car is there and then, when the car is returned, download the US map? In fact, how are the maps going to be updated? Or is Volvo planning in never updating the maps again?

I wanted to know if my Overseas Delivery Program customers could use the Navigation system in their 2007 XC90 while in Europe. I asked my Volvo Factory rep and he told me that the European map data can't be downloaded. He said no modifications can be made to it. As far as US map data updates, I have been told they can be purchased and downloaded to a 2007 or later XC90 at a US Volvo dealer.
I showed the 2007 XC90 Navigation system to an Overseas Delivery Program customer this weekend. It was weird to reach under the drivers seat and not find the Nav DVD unit. The 2007 Navigation system graphics are improved and there are some other improvements.
The rest of the 2007 Volvo models continue to utilize a DVD based Navigation system.
William

There goes one of the biggest conveniences of OSD. Nice, Volvo!

Re: European Nav DVD/Map (William)

Thats definitely not good not being able to use the Nav in Europe. I guess I just have to bring my Garmin GPS loaded Euro map during my next OSD
I wonder if this change with hard disk is created to make the Nav unit access the data faster. In my experience with my Nav unit in my V70R, many times I felt that the DVD unit is just too slow especially when you are looking for a particular place of interest, the search is slow.

Far be it from me to comment on an option I didn't buy. However.... someone should mention the upside.
A HD based system should be snappier and more usable.

Also, as stated earlier, the HD system is faster, easier to use and probably more functional.
It makes no difference to me. Volvo provided all the maps we needed on our OSD trip- and we never got lost.
But if I had an HD- driven nav system, it would be really cool if you had the option of updating the maps youself via a firewire cable and internet download.

I can't tell you how many times the Nav system saved me in Europe. Especially in Amsterdam where there are a lot of streets that don't look like streets.
Where's the then new HD unit located... still in the back? Be worth to find out where and the type of harness they use. It would be pretty cool to take, let see, maybe the DVD unit out of your V70 R and plug it into the XC90 while your there. If the capability is there, and the old harness used for the DVD / Digital jukebox is still there... then all you would need is to track down an old European Disc...which would be the least of your problem.
If not, I would track down something hand held as you already know joy and relief of having a Nav system
Good Luck
Volvo does not seem to push the NAV’s.
I wanted to get one, but none of their pre-optioned XC90s came with one. I know that people believe that the NAV is Volvo’s week link since it does not have touch screen or voice interface like Acura and others … but I would have probably ordered it if the wait for a special order was not 12 weeks when I did my OSD.
Do not rely on Volvo travel’s directions. They are not like AAA or even Map Quest. A local Swedish travel agency does them. Hans at FDC wanted mine do to their low quality. The agency didn’t even provide me a map of Denmark even though half of my bookings were there.
On the good side, two of our funniest experiences were getting lost. One time ending up at a “economic prison” and another time meeting two Swedish teenagers selling hotdogs insisting trying out their Australian accents on me. I am not Australian, not that there is anything wrong with that.
Traveling in Sweden and Denmark is not like France and Belgium.
