Took my car to the dealer's yesterday for tranny service. They are installing the ETM update at the same time. I asked if this overwrites my BSR software, but they did not know. The master technician was going to call VCNA to get an answer. I would assume that this is the case, since I lost the last throttle update with BSR overwrite.
The ETM software update is reducing the sensitivity to throttle body carbon buildup, according to the service advisor, it does not fix the throttle position sensor wear-out problem. If I overwrite this update again, will that affect the ETM hardware warranty?
This should be a common issue to everyone with a 'chip'.
And don't slaughter me if I have missed that memo.

Re: ETM update and ECU tuning (Mika)

How the heck would Volvo know if someone else's software overwrites their's?
Now you made them aware of your flash and if your car is under warranty and you have a problem they now have an excuse
I think it does overwrite everything, we will know soon
JRL

My initial research showed that there is a ETM software reload option, SEPERATE from the ECM software reload available when the car is hooked up to the Volvo diagnostics equipment. Whether they are two actual software files available, or just one, is not 100% clear to me.

Re: ETM update and ECU tuning (Mika)

So, now I know the campaign 155 writes over the ECU, and deletes the BSR tuning. According to VCNA, the ECU reflash would again rewrite this ETM update. Nice, the car goes like crap now, and there's a dead spot in the gas pedal in low revs. But the tech wants me to drive a month with stock ECU without TCM reset to see if the GT shift flare comes back. He says he cannot even get a valve body from Volvo without him personally replicating the symptoms I was describing and sending them the data from the tranny, even though he believed the VB is my problem.

Re: ETM update and ECU tuning (Mika)

This JUST happened to me today! SOB's at Volvo said that NOTHING will be done with the ECU. (I have BSR Stage 1)
So out I drive and the car runs great (ETM upgrade done) BUT my BSR tuning is gone.
So NOW what do I do? reprogram it back to BSR?

Re: (SuperSwede)

I asked BSR about this once, and they said that the new SW will become the stock SW in the box. It did not, the box did not read the ECU before I flashed over again. BSR should include this update in their tuning software.

I'll try tonight.... I don't know here... but I'll tell you one thing...
Volvo is "scared"... I ranted at them PRETTY hard today and they admitted they f*cked up because I told them I have BSR on it. I just talked to them again and spoke to the head man there and he gave me his word he'll take care of any problems due to this. I'll keep ya all updated.
oh ya I agree with ya there... it's MUCH nicer ride now... even though I have NO POWER left... hahaha

Re: (SuperSwede)

That seems to be the standard answer from BSR. The thing is, the box does not seem to recoqnize the ECU has changed to know to read the car in this case. (Or rather, it did not after the last update to throttle parameters).
Someone needs to start kicking their a$$e$ to have them update their software with this.
Although, it is hard to prove that this latest update is overwritten, since it is about the feedback data sensitivity (according to VCNA). It should not be noticeable as such when driving, after the ECU adapts its parameters again. The older update, which I assume is now part of the campaign 155, does affect driveability. My car feels the same as after that one was first loaded, before I overwrote it.
Maybe the smoothness you're feeling is because you did not have that older update yet. The transitions are damped, making the engine jerk around less when opening or closing the trottle fast.
\\\\\\Or I may be talking out of my ass.

Re: (Mika)

hmmm... it was always smooth riding. It got really smooth when I first loaded in BSR. Transmission was super nice EXCEPT that the ETM made that the car didn't idle well when in gear and standing still. THAT is fixed now.
Hmm.. I didn't load BSR in again last night... still not sure if I should get on the phone with BSR or just load it in??
What i could do is to:
1. plug it in, hope I get "Read Car".
2. Upload the new data to BSR
3. Wait until BSR is done
4. Install the new settings
will that work?? Hmmmm??
Re: (SuperSwede)

I had my 00 R I'm selling in for a service. They did this recall flash upgrade.
I really thought that this may slow these cars down, au contraire, it's much quicker and much smoother now.
This is on an UNmodified ECU, apparanty it will wipe out your ipd, BSR, etc. flash
Found out today that this is a FEDERAL recall so if your (99 thru 01) Volvo is brought to a Volvo dealer it WILL be reflashed unless you make it perfectly clear that you don't want it.
It WILL wipe out all previous programming, it's an ETM and a total ECU reflash

Re: (JRL)

Damn... thanks for that info... weird that Volvo didn't tell me that.
Anyway I had to "Read Car" again and will upload the new settings to BSR to get an update. hopefully everything will go ok. I'll probably know by Wednesday.

Re: (SuperSwede)

So, I got the 'read car' also, uploaded the SW, and waiting for the best.
Interestingly, my idle is worse now than before. It seems to be 50-100 rpm lower, and I get the shakes when shifting to P. Also the power steering pump causes shakes at idle when turning the wheel quickly. Hard to say whether the car is otherwise smoother, since I liked the snappy acceleration and brutish exhaust popping at transitions better with the BSR... The throttle response is much slower ('safer') now, and I forget to push it hard enough to get going in traffic. But I forget how exactly the car was when stock, and comparing to BSR tuning is not very fair.

Re: (Mika)

Mika,
I am having the same rough idle condition in my V70 T5 since recieving the ETM/ECU software update.
Car will idle at 700RPM. When the A/C compressor kicks on/off or when other electrical items in car "fire off" (as you say when you engage power steering), the idle drops 200/300 RPM and engine begins to stall. The engine shudders violently, electrical system dims, and steering wheel and passenger compartment vibrates violently.
As explained to me by dealer: The idle cannot be adjusted on these cars. It is set by the software and maintained by the ECU/ETS system. The new software wipes out the adaptive learning of the ECU. Therefore, many drive cycles are required for the ECU to go through adaptive learning process. I am being advised to drive the car for a couple of weeks and report back if the rough idle and sluggish performance go away. Also advised that individual driving habits have a lot to do with it. Suggestion was to mix up my driving habits and styles if I want to speed up adaptation.

Re: (Matt S.)

After talking to BSR directly my car is now fixed (BSR is installed).
I just tuned the car this morning and sa far it seems to be running just fine. The ETM and "Eliminate Neutral control program" seems to work fine with the new update BSR sent me.
I'm still pissed off at Volvo for treating me to poorly but I'll fight that battle with them to comp my transmission oil change.
