EST Catback + JRL Mod

2322 Views 25 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  GiRaff3
Is it worth it? Will the change be much noticeable?
...I almost feel bad cutting up my EST exhaust, but I think I want my car a bit louder...

Also, is there anyone in the Tri-State area who can do a quality JRL mod? (I've had bad experience with exhaust shops in the past - I want a good quality pipe and nice welds) ... Anybody?

Thanks

Dude, why do you think you need to cut your EST exhaust? That doesn't get touched...
Re: EST Catback + JRL Mod (tomedkaz)

baxteR and I were discussing this at the NE GTG thingy this past wekend. I'm sure the resonator on the EST system serves a purpose to decrease droning. And I also mentioned how guilty I'd feel cutting that system up.

Unfortunately, there's only one way to find out...

VolvoKidS60R did it on his EST and it sounds better, more aggressive. EST is a bit too quiet for my taste as well with the cat on at least.

What do you mean? The EST catback comes with a resonator. Perhaps the thing you're thinking of is the cat?

I just can't hear the typical 5-cylinder drone when I rev up-and down... you know what sound I'm talking about...
the real sexy 5 cylinder sound.
You think removing the EST resonator will do that?!

I did the JRL mod to my Ferrita exhaust. It too was on the quiet side. It sounds much better, same tone just louder and more raw sounding. I would do it all over again.

Do you have a sound clip by any chance?
Re: EST Catback + JRL Mod (tomedkaz)

The resonator on my EST catback actually rubbed on my driveshaft, similar to the rain squeel sound. Once I got my downpipe on and the exhaust settled it stopped. It happened on both Rs. I believe it was just not lined up right.

Decisions decisions.....

I may just bring the system to a shop before I install it and have them weld a 2" SS straight pipe in its place before I install it.

again, is there any droning on the highway with it removed?
Re: EST Catback + JRL Mod (tomedkaz)

You know, I don't.
I'll see about making one in the next few days. I'm gonna have to borrow a video camera.

I would like to get my resonator removed so:

1) there is more clearance between the exhaust and the driveshaft.
2) some more sound out of the exhaust would be nice.
3) i am pretty sure that i am suffering from some unneeded back pressure because my shifts from 2nd - 3rd and 3rd - 4th have an almost forceful kind of gargle coming from the rear.

Turbo cars need free-flowing exhaust and I am not getting that feeling currently.

Does anyone have a video/sound clip of the EST exhaust with resonator delete?

If you are going to do this, you could always have a 3" -> 2x2" collector made by someone like Burns Stainless. Good prep if you ever decide to get a 3" downpipe, avoids a 2.5" bottle neck (which I don't think really makes a quantifiable difference in power, but if you're a stickler for details).

That is the set-up I'm running (EST is Jetex clone), and I LOVE the sound.

NOTE: I'm guessing that the below pics are appropriate, can't see hosted pics behind this firewall... mods, I apologize if they are actually porn...
