Erie Volvo, what a shame

I remember when this junk yard cared more about the cars and the community that the $$$, but my recent experience with them felt like they've turned into just another LKQ junk yard. I remember when Erie Vovo would hook you up with whatever part you needed to get your Volvo back together. This is who they are now:

Now, this could just be the one person I was dealing with via eBay messages but it's not a good look. First, they lied to me, then wanted to rip me off out of spite. ***holes.

I drove a few hours to go there for a black hood they said was Hollander 0-0-0, with a top dollar price, donor had 100 K miles. That 0-0-0 means no dents, dings, or paint issues. Get there and there is a scratch in it - ok things happen can be touched up. Brought it home and put it on. A couple weeks later it had gotten dirty, the first time I wash it and paint chips completely through the clear, in some places to the primer, all over the place. Not sure if black wax or what. Never again.

I haven't dealt with them in years, but thanks for the anecdotes. It seems like they're getting too big for their britches. Or some stable genius of a middle manager is using the amount of pissed off people on social media as a performance metric

They’ve been lackluster for the last 5 years or so. They only want to move high dollar pieces, and don’t care much for anything else.

that has been my experience, anyway

Somewhat on topic, but I've had much better luck searching for parts at junkyards through car-part.com. Depending on what it is, either sort by nearest or lowest price. It uses the same listing software that most junkyards use, and much easier than calling around all over the place.

I had bought a "like new refurbished" wheel from them. Received it, painted over dirt on the barrel and peeling at the inner rim. Also a COMPLETELY different color from stock.

Contact them, get a snide response to return as "not liking it" - coincidentally an eBay return reason that doesn't ding their stats. Return it normally, they withhold the original shipping cost of the defective item.

Wasn't pleased.

Nope, that's a "Not As Described" - these days, everyone has a high-rez camera in their pocket, so no excuse for not disclosing the exact condition with good photos.

I had similar experiences with another eBay seller. They have a xc60 ocean race and I need a driver's side front door scuff plate/door sill that says Volvo Ocean Race. They did not have it listed so I thought I would ask. They replied that we don't sell that as a separate item. "We only sell that with the whole cut of the door frame." I thought that makes no sense.

I was in the area a few years ago and stopped by to get something. Was told I'd need to wait 3-4 hrs for them to get the part. It would have taken someone 5 minutes to get it. I was willing to wait 15-20 minutes. Asked about a LF carpet section. $100. New from Volvo was $140 at the time. No thanks.

Speaking of shipping costs, they abuse the ebay system to get more money out of a sale….

I'm surprised to read all this, and am sad. This is why recyclers die. Word gets out, they get too restrictive or customer service is bad and then nobody uses them. I did have a surprising exchange from them on intsta that made me wary. They posted a 'look what we just got in' and I inquired about the shifter knob. NIB it couldn't be that much more. Maybe someone needs customer relations training.

Exactly. That's the reason I used. They manually issued a partial refund, withholding their shipping cost.
In that case just dispute and have eBay's buyer protection force a full refund. I've had to deal with sellers like that before.

Yeah that seems to be a common tactic on eBay - list a shipping cost (generally much higher than actual), so that in case of a refund situation, shipping isn't refunded, only the item cost. Hence why eBay tells sellers that offering free shipping is more likely to lead to a sale.

I've seen junkyards and ebay sellers list parts for HIGHER than new costs, just because those parts are backordered from the OEM. It's just ridiculous what the used car part market has become in my mind - but that also says volumes about new part costs and availability too.

so that's why...

yeah, but paypal does its own thing with disputes and refunds, and has pulled through where eBay offered only a middle finger

I just purchased a 65k mile alternator from them. Lifetime warranty. Couldn't find a low mileage one anywhere else.

But, I do agree they've gone downhill.

I bought from Erie a front fender to fit my '17 V60 in matching paint described as perfect, but it did require a bit of paintwork at the bottom edge using my OEM touchup paint. I picked it up where it was leaning by their front door, and I was very happy to get it to avoid the expense and hassle of bodywork and paint. I cannot imagine traveling the junkyards comparing fenders with the exact paint code.

The way I see it, if you've got the time, go hunt for what you want and save some money. If not, pay the Volvo specialist.

I got a PS pump from them and was too stupid to ask the mileage beforehand. They told me it has 90k miles on. It was from a 2006 S60 and installed it on a 2005 S60. It started leaking around the pulley shaft 1k miles after installation. Wheeping more closely describes the condition. The steering did improve and it is not leaking profusely like the old one.

I paid 75 bucks for it. Hopefully is lasts a long time with proper maintenance. The pulley diameter is smaller than the 05' design, but there does not seem to be a problem with the serpentine belt.

Whatever.

If judging on the basis of anecdotes, I've had several transactions with Erie VoVo over the last decade+, all satisfactory and all very good value.

It’s $20 to ship a headlight from my zip to their zip. They’re still gouging on shipping cost, regardless

Hey Guys, just saw this thread and wanted to chime in. Shipping prices have gotten crazy the past few years, especially for odd shaped or large parts.

Not sure what happened nor how this conversation between Erie and boostednbagged went so sideways. Seems really out of character for them based on my experience which has always been positive. They have been one of those long-time companies supporting the Volvo community and I have not heard of any shady shenanigans. There may have just been a mistake made by one of the sales folks and their quote on the lens. I trashed a S60CC lens this past summer, I should have kept it! :)

I want to help the folks in our community and aside from their sales folks, I have had some conversations with their owner Jack over the years. His email is jack@erievovo.com I recommend reaching out to Jack if anyone has any issues.
