I have managed to calculate to following equation:
C70 + Wide Wheels (even with v. good tyres) = crap in the snow.
My question is, should you turn the traction off, or let it work away to assist you? I only ask because it makes real funny noises and doesn't sound to healthy...

Re: Equation (topless_tart)

never driven in snow before... but dont you usually put on winter/snow tires??
and yes traction control sounds terrible doesnt it?! it sounds like your tires are at some high pitched whine struggling to go when it cant
perhaps try your W button.. or turn the traction control off and drive slower.

Re: Equation (topless_tart)

Never driven in the snow, and don't think I would ever want to. I'd imagine with a set of 17's(17x7 probably) and good snow tires, the FWD Volvo should do pretty okay. I thought with manual tranny, you can ease into 2nd, either skipping 1st all together, and get less torque to spin the tires...and off you go?
Maybe with auto is a bit more tricky?

Re: Equation (The_one_n_only)

Well, I ventured out in it yesterday - thought 4 wheels better than 2!
Can't use the W button as mine is manual, but even trying to pull away in 2nd was a nightmare.
Was on a tiny incline could not move - trying to keep the RPM below about 2200 as any hint of turbo sent everything nutty!
Massive understeer at like 3-4 mph, but at least the ABS works!
Haven't got winter/snow tyres as there really isn't that much call for them over here. Big snowfall doesn't happen year in year out.
I guess I was just surprised, I thought she would be much better in the snow.
Won't take her out again - too scared to hurt her

Hehe...alright I'm convinced. No driving in the snow for my C.
Bridgestone Blizzaks [ 16 in ] on Mille Meg 2 from Tirerack is
probably the best auto investment I ever made. They are like
stickum on the pavement, ice, and snow.

Re: Equation (topless_tart)

I've taken my car out plenty of times in the snow with no problems (going skiing - I can fit 2 snowboards into the car!). I was using Sumitomo HTRZIIs at the time (currently using Sumitomo HTR+ - should be better). Anyways, I drove in 3 most of the time and when it got rough I switched over to L (W). Oh yeah, chains help too.
I won't be able to use the car anymore for ski trips as I have lowered the car and widened the stance to 225. The chains are rubbing against the suspension.
Oh yeah, TRACS stay on.

Re: Equation (mike_c70)

Normally you would get thinner tires for the winter as this helps cut though the snow better than wider ones. I have 17X8's in the summer and downgrade to 15X7's with Michelin Artic Alpins in the winter. Definetely helps out with the thinner tires.
RJ

Re: Equation (GShyneDM)

Oops! That's a type. I meant 235s. But yeah, only wider tires (which is basically widening the stance by 0.1" )
