I purchased in february a '91 740 turbowagon, 190k, auto trans. This is the first engine-related problem I've had with it. I was driving the car regularly until taking a vacation on 24 July. Between then and my return on 16 August, the car was driven twice for short (<5 mile) distances. I began driving it again upon returning; yesterday (19 Aug) I drove it to a movie theatre and back, after about ten miles on the way back it started turning over strangely and stalled going up a hill. I was able to nurse it home in 1st and 2nd. The car may be due for a tune-up (fuel injectors or filter, maybe?).
Now, when the engine is running it is much louder than normal and if I don't give it gas, it stalls. When it's running the engine struggles and shakes much more than normal. I drove it about 200 yards today; the problem is still there, and I'm not sure if running the car is doing engine damage.
Given my level of expertise (none), I'll probably wind up taking it to a mechanic. But any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Engine trouble. (dwightleewest)

The last time I had problems similar to those, I had a spark plug wire loose. Running on three cylinders will do all those things. Before shelling out for a mechanic, it might be worth your time to change the plugs (to make sure it's not them) and make sure the spark plug wires are in good condition and are fully seated on the plugs. That may not be it, but if it is, it'll be much cheaper for you to figure out than a mechanic - and if not, plugs are cheap and most cars could use new ones anyway.
good luck,
scott
