Hi all,

I am in he process of resurrecting a 2006 V70R. One issue has been niggling. Wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or any ideas re an engine "stumble". During normal acceleration, no problems. However, under heavy acceleration, in any gear, the car "stumbles" under full throttle. The stumble does not start at initial full throttle, but shortly after and ends @ 4k rpm with no issues beyond 4k. Feels like it is not getting the full fuel supply in the rmp range. If in a higher gear at lower rpm and full throttle it is more noticeable, and kind of "chugs". The car also has a backfire issue, coming off the gas and on downshifts ,which is more noticeable when cold. Not throwing any codes

What has been done so far: new fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel sensor, differential pump, all new plugs, CEM re-flash, one coil replaced, #4 (rest are ok), new thermostat, new alternator, new air mass meter/sensor and air intake tube, new o2 sensor, new turbo charge air hose.

I tried a second mechanic, mine is a volvo specialist who seems to have run out of ideas, for another input and was told that until the problem occurs at low rpm, he could not help. He thought it might be one of the electrical sensors in the engine, indicating there are quite a few.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Did you make sure you used the right spark plugs, I had a shop do mine a few years ago (I never let people touch my car normally. I was in a pinch) and I found out a week later that after tracking the same issue you described that the plugs were at fault. They had put the short plugs in. I swapped in the right ones and boom no stumble

I had an occasional similar issue on acceleration. I also had a very wonky idle. Mine was resolved with a new (used) throttle body/electronic throttle module. Though this probably isn’t the problem if you don’t have lots of miles.

mine went somewhere around 190k. It was doing it when I bought the car at this mileage so I don’t know for sure. I’m at 195k now and I still have no issues. I bought the new part from a 2.5t XC90 with 70k miles for $50. Make sure you get the lowest mile one you can as it is a wear part. :)

Thank you for your reply. I am pretty sure my mechanic used the correct plugs.

Hi MicahN,

thanks for the reply. I have about 115k on the car. Was your issue consistent in all gears?
I thought so too, shouldn't be hard to check the receipt for work and parts to just make sure they are correct.

Agreed. I wonder if VIDA might provide some further insight. I am not familiar with it as I only have OBD II. I suspect my mechanic has it though.

Also, I just read an older post (Misfiring in cylinder 1 and 5. Hesitation/stuttering ) and they replaced all the coils. I have only replaced 1 coil, but the others were fine. I saw a suggestion to clean all electrical connectors in the car. And another about the clearance on the plugs. I think I'll give my Volvo mechanic a call and see what he thinks re your suggestion and the others. I appreciate the help. I'll try and update the thread once I get the skinny.

It was especially prevalent in first, second, and sixth at lowish RPMs, but it could be noticed in any gear.

Interesting. Mine is all gears it takes a second of full throttle then it skips a bit until 4500 or so then is smooth again.
