Hi, I have a friend who's 740 2.3 starts up ok and runs for about 2/3 miles and the cuts out, it won't start again until you toe the car a few yards or its been sat for a about an hour, then fires up and runs for a while, then cuts out again, doesn't seem to be a spark at the coil? Fuels ok, any ideas before I replace the E.C.U
thanks Stuart

Re: Engine cuts out (Stuart.br)

Welcome to Swedespeed, Stuart.
Your email is UK and you are in Spain - where is the Volvo and friend?
Below is the link to 740 fixes including mass air meter problems and faulty fresh air thermo/flap as this could cause the described symptoms.
George Dill
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/

Re: (Stuart.br)

The thermo and flap are in the fresh air box with the air filter.
The mass air meter is in the duct (hose) between the air filter and (dirty?) throttle body.
George Dill

Re: Engine cuts out (Stuart.br)

You say the fuel is okay, but the problem you describe seems to be a fuel system problem.
I would first change the fuel filter.
Then, check the fuel system relays.
Then I would move on to the Air Mass Meter. I wouldn't think the fresh air flap in the air box would cause that kind of problem, but I've been wrong before.
You could also have an overheating ignition relay, but that's a different set of problems.
Does the car slowly die? Or just completely stop running.
When it restarts does it restart quickly and easily or does it sputter to life?
Thanks and I hope this helps.

Re: Engine cuts out (CarlieBentley)

I have a similar, if not a same problem. My car won't start again after I have driven it a while (only when the weather is hot, like over a 90 degrees, especially when it is humid) until I open the hood for about a minute or two.
Then it will restart immediately, without sputtering or anything.... the car is not overheating,. I have had this problem for almost a year, but since it only happens in hot weather, it was impossible to realize that it had not been fixed until now.
The mechanics think it could be the battery connections, or a relay switch.
The fuel relay switch?
Do you have any suggestions for me?
Thank you very much.
Ilse

760 1990
I was just told by a friend that it could be the fuelpressure regulator, and the gas filter.
I had the battery connections cleaned. Problem persists.
Any suggestions?
Sorry I waited so long to reply.

Re: Engine cuts out (gdill2)

Hi,
I was just reading the quick reference guide: Hot start Problem Diagnosis.
Both questions assume that the engine cranks...
in my case the engine spins without a sound, (there is no cranking), but once I open the hood to cool it for a couple of minutes), it turns over right away and behaves normal.
Would I look for a solution under section 1 or section 2 ?
Thanks,
Ilse

Thanks George.
What are the symptoms of solenoid failure ? Is the starter solenoid affected by heat?
I just read in the FAQs that someone with a similar situation discovered that the problem was in the Power Stage..
He cleaned the contacts and coated them with dielectric grease, then coated the heat sink with a thermal compound... and the problem did not come back.
.. where is the "Power Stage" located?

Re: Engine cuts out (blitzmesser)

I just read more of the FAQs and understand where the Power Stage is and what it is.
What do you think of the solution to coat the heat sink side with a thermal compound? (What is a good thermal compound?)
I am not a mechanic whatsoever, don't even know what is what, but I am learning through the FAQs.
I have spent so much time and money on having problems fixed, only to get the car back with the same problems, that I have plans to find some solutions for myself.
Thank you for your input!!!!

Actually: my engine does not cut out. I never loose power. Once I stop the car and turn the motor off, I cannot restart when the weather is hot. I have to open the hood for a couple of minutes, or wait a few hours.
