I've asked on other forums, but would like to ask here too. I have a new XC70 with about 500 miles on it so far. I plan to change to synthetic oil once the engine has been run enough for the valves to seat, etc. The question is how soon to do that? Recommendations on other forums have ranged from about 1,500 to 5,000 miles. In advance, thanks. This website is a great source of advice and information!

Not sure what owner’s manual would suggest, but I do also believe in 1500 miles is a good time to do it. That sounds about right, I also followed that for my c70 when I got the engine rebuilt.

Every Volvo rep that I have spoken to, suggested that one should wait at last until the 1st oil change which is at 3,750 miles. I have heard 5,000 miles too. But most people suggested to wait until the 3,750-mile mark. I did the same thing for my car although I did change the original fill at 1,200 miles with dyno oil. Started using Mobil 1 from 3,750 and on and after my ECU upgrade I switched to a heavier oil (5W-50) with Castrol Syntec (was the only one I could find at that weight) but I am not keeping that...I have 20,700 miles and at 22,500 I will be switching (hopefully permanently) to either AMSOIL 10W-40 or Shell Rotella 5W-40.
Yannis

Glinder, I had an oil change at 1600 on my new S60 2.4T I had it changed with regular oil. I will have a synthetic change on Tuesday at 3700 miles.
Yannis, I have read that a lot of people buy their own syn oil and take it to the dealer. Is that OK? I guess I could call Village Volvo huh? Shoulda asked when I booked it in.

We always have Mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30 and on occasion we have Valvoline 10W-30.
Yannis
