I've been wondering what is wrong with my right rear brake. Since the day I washed it and left it in the garage, when I drove it the brakes were stuck to the rotor. I stepped on the gas and broke it free. ever since then the right rear brake has not been the same. I drove it on a road trip and noticed the wheel was dirtier than the front one (very unusual). When I release the e-brake and drive it in reverse sometimes I hear a loud popping sound.
I've removed the caliper and noticed nothing wrong with my pads.
Any ideas?

I am driving to Little Rock, Ar and then to Houston, Tx and back to Mississippi this weekend.

Re: Emergency Brake (sinisin63)

I have the same problem on my V70R after washing. As with you, my right rear parking brake locks up. The service brakes can be fine, but the parking brake locks to the rotor. Too bad you didn't pull the rotor off when you had the caliper off. You're going to have to go back and pull the rotor off before your weekend trip. If I remember correctly, a 10 mm bolt holds the rotor onto the hub. After washing my car, I now park in the garage with the parking brake off, and a pair of wheel chocks to keep the car from going anywhere.

Re: Emergency Brake (xman03)

I second that (replacing the shoes that is). I also heard the odd crack when backing up over the last few weeks, and a tendency for the e brake to engage later when pulling the handle. Long story short, yesterday I was driving to work when I heard a loud crack, followed by scraping noises and heavy vibrations felt through the steering wheel. Had to be flat bedded to the dealership, whi gave me the verdict that the shoe had come apart and had lodged in the wheel, shearing off any number of components before I could stop the car. Total damage $1,700+ (car is still in the shop), so I know I'll be very alert to any changes in handle play or strange noises going forward...

Re: Emergency Brake (MAC1LSR)

I'll definetly tear into it this weekend again before I head out. I was hoping to find something wrong with the brake pads in the caliper but I know for sure it is the e-brake. I just don't know how to take the rotor off but it can't be too hard for this aircraft mechanic.

You only need to push out the 2 pins holding the metal spring pressing on the pads. After that the pads lift out, without removing the caliper.
Just making sure your aware to save you time in the future

You have to break the rotor loose with a hammer/mallet. If you're replacing the rotor, just use a hammer, if you're re-using the rotor, use something that doesn't dent it, like a piece of wood between it and the hammer

E-brake shoes and springs should be replaced every ~3 years or so

Re: Emergency Brake (S60R1)

I've been hitting it pretty hard with a block of wood too. I've only seen some brake dust on the floor and still no signs of breaking free. I hope I'm not forgetting to remove something else. I've taken off two bolts for the caliper and hung it, one small 10mm bolt, anything else?

Re: Emergency Brake (volvosince16)

I hope autozone carries these pads. Because I've got to drive to Little Rock, AR tomorrow.
