My wife's 2004 S60 2.5 T (auto, 70,000) would not start the other day. It cranked but refused to start (1/2 tank left). The next day I disconnected the battery. The car started but after driving a little while it went into limp mode. The following messages started appearing:<p>Reduced engine performace<br>Transmission service required<br>ABS service required<p>Towed the car to the garage. Mechanics have hard time finding the problem. I also remember that the car threw ABS service required several days ago, but the code cleared itself. New battery did not help. <p>Any thoughts would be appreciated.<p> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/confused.gif" BORDER="0">

I take it that its not at a Volvo dealer? I say that because most hops will only be able to communicate with the engine control module. That being said, if the engine control module itself is causing communication issues on the network, it would not detect this itself. the other modules however would and store fault codes. If those other codes are out of the reach of your shop, they will have trouble determining the route cause. Sometimes the dealer really is the best route for a speedy and accurate repair.

check the battery cables for corosion. In this case this is probably a more complex issue, but often these weird ones are caused by a lack of voltage and something fairly simple.

Re: Electrical problem (Denis)

Not sure this is exactly the same issue, but our 06 S60 with 35K miles died on my wife's drive home. Towed it to dealer and they said loose wire at battery. Didn't buy it. Next day car would not start. It cranked and cranked but would not turn over. Dealer looked at it again and said they couldn't find problem. Third day it stranded her in a parking deck. She played with it a while and got it started. Dealer kept it for almost a week and replaced the engine speed sensor. Have not had any problems since. It only threw an immobilizer code once or twice, but no other codes. All along it had great cranking power but would just never turn over.
