Hi, I was reading "another" Volvo forum and came across an interesting bit of information, and was wondering if it's true. Somebody said that with the newer Volvos, (and I'll assume that he/she was talking about the current generations of the models) if there is an electrical problem, the cars must be taken to a Volvo dealership because private/independent mechanics don't have the codes. Is this true? If so, then that would pose a problem if I buy a Vovo, as my nearest dealership is in Minneapolis, 100 miles away.

Re: Electrical Codes (gdill2)

I go to a private mechanic who specializes in European cars; VW's, Audis, Porsches, Saabs, Volvos, etc. But I don't know if he would have Volvo codes should something go wrong. The only "new" Volvo I could afford would be an S40 well under 30K, which would probably limit me to the base si 168hp non-turbo version. But I'm thinking that a 2004.5 or a 2005-2006 three years old with around 40K miles in, say, 2008 or 2009, could be had for 20K or less. <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/biggrin.gif" BORDER="0">

Dealerships have a software system either called either VADIS or VIDA which is used to download updated software to newer models. Most indie mechanics would probably not have enough volume to justify the cost, however. I am pretty sure it is still possible though for a mechanic to download codes and reset. You probably ought to ask your mechanic what he can and can't do with newer Volvos.

Re: Electrical Codes (Wayne T5)

I agree alot with WayneT5. Ask what he can and can not do. I know the one I go to that is ONLY Volvo has many code books. I should think if he has a really good relationship and parts dept buying history like mine. He would have somewhat better inroads to getting a copy of the newer output code data update sheets. And really if you buy new and or up to three years old a Indie will not need them. Free is free at the dealer till then. <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://********************/smile/emthup.gif" BORDER="0">
