I hate to restart this whole topic. I had mentioned when I bought my car the salesman said regular grade was okay and as usual the community shared great info. This article has an explanation along with links to two spreadsheets-"Premium Required" & "Premium Recommended" and the XC40 is on the recommended list (page 9). I'm not saying it's correct just thought I'd share.

Buy a 45 thousand dollar car and pinch a few pennies. :(

Love that my Costco has 93 octane at the 91 octane price anywhere else.

From the Owner's Manual:

Octane rating
Volvo requires premium fuel (91 octane or higher) for all T5, T6 and T8 engines, and recommends AKI 93 for optimal performance and fuel economy. See decal examples in illustrations 1 and 2.
For optimal performance, Volvo recommends premium fuel (91 octane and higher) for T4 engines. However, engine reliability should not be affected as long as 87 octane or higher is used. See decal example in illustration 3.

Looking at the lists, Edmunds is suggesting the T5 engine "recommends" 91+ while the T6/T8 engine "requires" 91+. As jayman stated, the manual says otherwise. Go with the manual.

Is your T5 going to detonate on 87 octane? No, but it probably won't run well at high load and your fuel economy will decrease because the engine is pulling ignition timing.

Octane requirements are not based on how much the car is.

Here's a tip that is universal:
Read your owner's manual and do what it requires. Works every time on every car.
That cant be true......as every car and motorcycle forum I have been on....all argue on what gas and/or oil to use

"Here we go again."

Edmunds probably made the mistake because originally the T5 Drive-E used regular 87 octane in 2015 and 2016. They probably didn’t realize the engine requirements changed for this engine to require premium.

Is Edmunds a car company? Just checking to see if I missed something....
