What you think? I found this while searching the web for Volvo tuners.

http://www.heicosportiv.de

Sorry Guys, forgot I was in the 40 forum when I posted I was going to edit the post, but I figure I'll leave it up, maybe someone will find it interesting even though it's not a "40"
I have many questions about the dual exhaust setup.
1) aren't the 2.4T and 2.4 T5 single turbo designs? Then that means the exhaust gases after the manifold are already being recombined. Then, wouldn't the whole puprose of the dual exhaust get lost since the gases from each cylinder bank are being recombined anyways?
2) if this is for a 2.4 standard that would make more sense since each cylinder bank could have an independent exhaust path. but that's only if there are dual cats already in place. I doubt that the 2.4 benefits as much from a dual exhaust due to the lower engine output.
I don't even know if the standard s60 has a dual exhuast, but I'm trying to rationalize if it's a performance enhancement or a visual enhancement.
Yes, i know that part of the point is to reduce backpressure, but that can be done with a single exhaust as well. I would think that having a single exhaust would be the most practical because a turbo-back dual exhaust split into two pipes probably hurts performance since the scavage cycle gets recombined from two separate pipes (i.e. that would be the same kind of problem as mixing the exhuast gas from the uneven lenght headers).
I am not an expert at these things so feel free to comment, I am just trying to think out the theory in my head.
I guess if the s60 has dual turbos, then the above is void and I stand corrected. :> )

[This message has been edited by joe_flies (edited 03-04-2001).]

Now I'm more confused. I did some reading and the S60 has an inline 5. So there is probably no good reason why a dual pipe exhuast benefits the engine. hmmm, this is getting weirder and weirder

It basically means the exhaust gases after the manifold through the headers are being combined. From that standpoint, the purpose of the dual exhaust does get lost. None of the Volvo S60 models come standard with a dual exhaust system.
I think that the main point of the dual exhaust setup on turbocharged Volvo's is to reduce backpressure like you stated. But the way that the Heico exhaust system is designed, it does not compromise engine torque because it is one pipe all the way to the muffler.
Check out the picture of the exhaust setup for the S80 T6. The T6 is dual turbo engine, but there is only a single pipe that goes all the way to the muffler. The second exaust pipe on the left, just comes from the muffler.
Pretty simple huh? The question remains, how much performance do you really get out of this design? This could be a case of form following funtion.

S.A.M. has a sport exhaust system for the new V70 that claims to give you 20 more horsepower. Although, this system is more complete and has a sport manifold downpipe, race cat, and sport exhaust from the catalytic converter.
-Drew
[This message has been edited by InDy (edited 03-06-2001).]

very illuminating ... that SAM system sounds pretty coool!
There were times when I said that i wasn't going to mod my S40. I've since found it's not so easy to do many mods for the 2001 s40. Now I think I will commute my S40 and get a second volvo to go mod crazy!
Man, who really cares how well it performs when it looks THAT good!
-d
[This message has been edited by darell (edited 03-10-2001).]

Wanted to correct Joe-f in that there is no 2.4 T5---that the T5 is a 2.3--no offense
intended. Next--for those who think the
dual exhausts and not only 'cool' but
useful and worth the price---what is the
price for total conversion, the availability
in the US and the documented benefits, if
any, (ie less stress, etc) for possibly
adding this.
