I'm getting intermittent DSTC service required warnings and have just 1,000 miles left on a 100,000-mile warranty on an 01 V70 T5.
My independent mechanic says no codes stored.
Any insights/advice? (Either on what might be wrong, how expensive it can prove, or how to work with dealer service to get it fixed before warranty expires.)
Great timing. Not.

Re: DSTC int warning light/warranty exp (sondagsakare)

Is the ABS TRACS light on intermittently? The reason could be a defective ABS module. Upon inspection and troubleshooting, about 90% of the Volvos that have intermittent ABS light will result in the replacement of the ABS unit.
On some Volvos C70, S70 and V70 the ABS and TRACS light comes on at times and stays on, sometimes it goes off. There seems to be no pattern to the problem. The longer you experience this problem, the longer the light will stay on.
Sometimes the ABS system will activate by itself (You will hear the pump and the valves activating) when going over a bump or rough road.
The Volvo ABS module (Computer) at a dealer sells for about $450.00 plus tax. This is in addition to the diagnosis and labor to remove and replace. In newer Volvos the units cost as much as $600.00.
Sometimes the computer will have no trouble codes stored in the memory. Troubleshooting only leads to the replacement of the ABS module (computer).
The repairs usually involve replacing damaged components or damage circuit boards.
http://home.earthlink.net/~vic...S.htm

Re: DSTC int warning light/warranty exp (w1ntson)

No; I get no other warning.
The DSTC light comes on under acceleration, stays on for a while, then either goes away or is absent when car is used again.
My mechanic suggested to ignore until light stays on, at which point repair could be expensive (replacement of something, as you think).
I've never had an ABS light go on in the car or heard ABS working.
Thanks for your quick reply! Got to go; back tomorrow. Have a nice evening.

My suggestion is to keep going to the dealer and complaining every time it does this and try to notice a patern, especially related to drivability and/or safety issues. Make sure that they "make note" of your problem(s). Then even after warranty if there is an issue, there's also a paper trail back to your original and on-going complaint, so they'll have to do something about it. You might also mention that you think it could be related to the ABS system, just to cover your bases there too, so if and when that fails, you have a paper trail leading down that avenue as well. Good luck, and don't give up making them document that there is an issue, even if they can't find it now.

Good advise MadeInJapan
Do you have another Volvo service centre in your area you could get a 2nd opinion from?
Not to be too cynical, but I am willing to bet as soon as your warranty coverage has expired, the techs will located your cars problem in an instant. $$$!!

Re: (w1ntson)

Agreed; that is good advice.
I'm pretty lucky to have the independent Volvo mechanic nearby--25 years experience with Volvos and very trustworthy. (So much so that I will probably go for another Volvo just because of him.)
But yep--second opinion and paper trail at Chicago dealership where the car was purchased. Seems like the best/only avenue.
Appreciate the replies.

"It happens during cornering more often than in a straight line."--same here. If I get a diagnosis I will share it.

Mine was just coming on intermittently,(04 V70R, never came on before), they said it had a stored code, reloaded the CEM (a 10 minute job) all seems good now)

might be worth considering a signed letter from your dealer manager to say basically that after the warranty if volvo DO see it or the car DOES log the codes... then they will deal with it free of charge because the problem itself was logged, notified volvo off and see before warranty expired.
long shot but might work

Go to the dealer. If you have a problem and very little time to diagnose it, it needs to be dealt with professionally otherwise you might end up suffering a huge out-of-pocket expense.
