We will be taking delivery of our S60R on May 22 at the FDC. This will be our second OSD Volvo - the first was my wife's XC90 in 2004 which we drove 5219 miles throughout Europe over the course of two months of work/holiday. That was a wonderful trip and we are hoping this one will be equally exciting.
This time around, we will be strictly on holiday and will be spending about two weeks, visiting Stockholm for 3 days, with the balance of the time in Norway, mostly in the Sognefjord region. I have a question that I am hoping someone might be able to help with - we would like to drive both RV55 and RV13, however, even in late May early June, as I understand, these high mountain roads (especially RV55) are subject to the potential for frozen precipitation, and with summer tires on the S60R, that is clearly an undesirable combination. Has anyone traveled these roads at that time of year? Are there any locals that might be able to give some insight into the conditions during that time of year?
I have enjoyed reading posts for some time now, and with the purchase of our third Volvo, I will likely be a more frequent poster!
Thanks
That time of year you should be fine. I've driven there (nice drive). You will likely see snow, but the roads should be 100% fine.
Drive the Trollstiegen while in Western Norway!

Re: Driving the RV55 and RV 13 in Norway in Late May/Early June (ncearthquake)

We took delivery of our XC90 2.5 AWD on May 13 and drove to Oslo, Bergen and return. The drive over the mountains was uneventful yet exilirating. Snow and ice on the ground but the roads were clear. Had a brief snow squall but only lasted a minute or two. Returning from Bergen over the high plateaus was like driving on the moon. Snow was 2-3feet deep over the ground but roads were clear. We put 1100 miles on over 7 days on a trip of a lifetime. The XC 90 purred the entire trip. One caveat! Dress appropriately! Sorry but no pics to send.

Thanks for both of your replies - as we plan our exact route, we are trying to be flexible in the unlikely event that one of these roads causes problems, however, it does seem that during the daytime, which is obviously quite long, one would expect the pavement to warm up quite a bit so as not to cause problems.
ncearthquake............

I have had a few customers drive in the mtns. of Norway in late may.....XC70/XC90"s and it was no problem...but the R sits much lower,so be careful. Be sure to put it in comfort mode!
Both Sweden and Norway are pretty good about getting roads cleared and passible in a very timely fashion...so unless it is actaully snowing while you are driving in the mtns....you should be okay!
There is always the trains...which IMO is a great way to tarvel! you save the gas $$ and the miles on the car....but I DO understand the fun and adventure of driving yourself. Either way...you will have a great trip

Re: Driving the RV55 and RV 13 in Norway in Late May/Early June (universityvolvoOSD)

I have read many times in this forum that the roads in Norway and Sweden are cleared of snow very quickly, and most roads are usually clear. Well, not burst anyone's bubble, but we just returned from Norway and Sweden and almost All the roads we saw had some ice or snow on them. It was snowing at least a little bit for most of the days there and I think we saw one plow. Also, no one clears any sidewalks there, and we found this quite dangerous, with many people falling down, including ourselves on occasion. Where are these roads that are cleared quickly? We are talking about Gothenburg and Stockholm, as well as the roads in Lapland.

Its March right! Iwould assume there is lots of snow on the roads. Its still winter in the mountains. In May its springtime. The flowers are blooming in Oslo. Icant vouch for Lapland. North of the Arctic Circle isnt it?

Here are some pictures from our OSD trip in 2004. This is the only snow we saw "on" the road. The date was June 8 and this was on Rt. 63 just south of Geiranger.

Here's another scenic shot from that day.

A week earlier, this was one of the many waterfalls we saw on the E134 in southern Norway on the way to Bergen.

You'll enjoy the trip. Take lots of pictures! (I believe I took nearly 3000!)
---Alan

Re: Driving the RV55 and RV 13 in Norway in Late May/Early June (ARMiller)

Great pictures - I had heard about small 'avalanches' on the road. We have finalized our entire trip and will be making a loop over the course of two weeks from Gothenburg to Oslo to Flam to Balestrand to Geiranger to Lillehammer to Gothenburg. In addition to the RV55 and RV13, we will also be on the RV63 as in your pictures, assuming it is open by June 1. Information on the web seems to indicate that it normally opens by the end of May. Thanks for posting the pictures, we are looking forward to the trip.

We did a similar trip, but bypassed Oslo by taking the Moss-Horten ferry and then went on the southern route E134 to Bergen for 2 days. From there to Voss, Flam and the ferry from Gudvangen to Kaupanger. After that we headed north to the Briksdalsbreen Glacier, a jog up to Geiranger then on to Lillahammer and back to Gothenberg with a last stop in Lysekl. I'll post some more pictures later.
