My '04 2.5T is at 108k miles and has begun making a clunking sound that is most noticeable/reproducible when easing on and off the gas a low speeds. It sounds exactly like what bad U-joints sound like on old rear drive cars. What are best guesses- CV joints? Motor mounts? Trans mounts? The car is going to the shop Monday and I'd like to be informed going in.

I am planning on taking my xc90 to the local meineke shop later this week. They do free inspections but beware of upselling. From there I usually take what they tell me, research the repair on this lovely forum, purchase the parts from IPDUSA.com and get it done myself.

As a follow up, the clunking sound was caused by failed motor mounts. My old xc90 feels so much more "carved from granite" now than before the repair. I guess the degradation occurred gradually enough I didn't realize just how much. Also, the S60 T5 loaner I was driving is a nice enough car (I loved the Sensus) but I was happy to give it back.
