Drive by wire, 1999-> C70s

Hi,
picking up on "drive by wire" and 1998/99 model year questions in Lucky's previous thread, couple comments to add to the mix.
Drive by wire is as Paul mentioned eletronic signal wire vs cable to throttle plate. I was comparing my 2000 model HPT to a 98 HPT, and combined with emails from some engineers in Sweden came to these unscientific conclusions:
1. There are more changes than simply the addition of fly by wire in 99. the intake manifold shape has straighter tubes to the block, promoting smoother flow more ideal to low end torque. The cam shaft is also ground differently, again to favor low end torque. There is variable valve timing on one side (I thought exhaust) varried mostly when motor was cold, and intended more for a cleaner running than performance. There is also a different mechanism to back off combustion pressure in 99. The 98 used management of the turno wastegate, where as the 99-> can use control of the throttle plate and I thought timing too. I read (I believe in an IPD news letter) that they can make the 99+ motor generate greater HP/torque because when it backs off using a non-waste gate mechanism the reaction time is faster, so they can run closer to the "edge" (wish I had theexact reference, regrets don't). I had earlie heard the 98 were faster because their high end torque was superior.
2. Driving 98 then 2000 then 98 back to back the PERCEPTION is when pushing gas on 98 slow reaction (normal turbo lag), then an exponential curve of more torque added tha brings that grin ear to ear. The 2000 has slow reaction (again, turbo lag), then torque kicks in more smoothly, but seems to lack that exponential kick at the end. Paul and I compared his chipped 99 to my stock 2000 and there was a difference no doubt, the G-tech meter told it all with as much as .7 second 0-60 difference (he faster of course) here at altitude (maybe 6300 feet in Castle Rock where we met).
3. On the tranny, the 98 had the different settings which is very nice (S/E/W), where as mine has only W as a choice, and computer learns driving style. The 2000 seems to up shift as soon as possible, which can annoy. The 2000 model (not 99, not 98) 4 speed auto had a different gear selector, with 1,2,3,D as compared to the 98/99's L,3,D. I use it as a "manual" on occasion, still darn smooth up shifts, but down shifts can be not so smooth if I don't spin up the motor to match the speed a bit.
From a longevity point of view, the 98 sure is a simpler system, lot to be said for less "stuff" to break that is electronic. Though, the 71 1800E I have has Bosch D-tronic ANALOG computer with throttle switch to sense idle/not idle, and 7-10 positions, has only needed the throttle switch replaced once, and injecors once at 180,000 miles, so who knows!
Ug, this got long...
And Lucky, I do love my 2000 C70. comfortible, safe, more betaiful than even the new Mercs that have virtually copied the coupes lines. I had the typical 70 series recalls done (light sockets, flasher, maybe couple little things) and have had a sunoof ratle on rough roads and wind noise due to frameless door windows. Other than that it just runs, makes me grin! In winter I use studdded tires on 15" rims and go ski in the mountains and passes most weekends doing fine on snow pack and winter conditions (winter mode and traction control on). You got to get the 13 speaker Dolby surround sound. listen to it, you just got to! Note the SC-900 model radio does prologic on CDs only, where as SC901 (in 99-&gt does it to FM also, totally amazing, I can't go back to non-prologic in a car period! Also, if/when you get one pay the bucks for the Volvo rubber winter mats which fit great and really save the interior, best dealer part I bought.

Regards,
Carl

I've got a 98 too, I love it. I lucked out, when I bought my car the SC-900 head unit was malfunctioning, so the dealer replaced it with the SC-901 free of charge

Hi, regrets did note see last question until now...
I thought Paul (Paul, are you here!) pulled a 6.9. But keep in mind
this is at 6,300 feet in Castle Rock Colorado (over 1 mile high).
Always curious what 0-60 times people get at sea level, especially comapare
of 98 and 99/2000 to better know difference in times.
Hope this helps...
Carl

Re: Drive by wire, 1999-> C70s (mtbman11)

mtbman, what exactly was malfunctioning? My SC-900 tends to eat the Cd that its playing and display "Error 02" so the dealer is ordering me a new one... well new 900 at least. BTW, how many watts and speakers is the SC900, i know the 901 is 400 I believe.
