During my trip to the West Coast last month, I had a couple instances where the drivers door would just unlock, i.e. raise the lock pin, while driving. This had happened twice before in the last year and I did not think much of it, just some glitch, so I just pressed the lock button to relock it. Since it occurred while driving, no big issue, however one time I came out from stopping for lunch and the drivers door is unlocked, (door pin raised), no other doors, other than the drivers door. (A condition not possible with the remote key of course.) I tried pressing the remote lock function which did nothing, confirming that the internal logic felt it was in the locked mode. (Even though mechanically Volvo logic does attempt to lock an already locked car).
Bottom line if you are having this little glitch at first it is a just an annoyance, but when you think you have your car secure at a restaurant or hotel, it becomes a bit of a problem. We just elected to cut out some vacation and get home.
The good news is that the dealer did resolve it right away, in spite of it being an intermittent problem, had the part(s), did not have to beg VCNA etc. I have had a complete turn around in service experience at Autobahn, where I bought the car in Fort Worth. I was told they have made some changes in their service department, and it shows, or else I have changed!
Nice to hear about some positive service every now and then. Glad that they had the problem resolved for you in a timely manner, unfortunate you had to cut some vaca time.......
What was the parts that they replaced for this problem? Did they tell you?

I had a Honda Accord that would do it rather constantly. It would do it if it was locked or unlocked. 80mph clunck clunk clunk. At a stop light, clunk clunk clunk. And so on. The rear door actuator had a bad sensor in it. The demon was released after that was replaced.
Bill

Re: Door Lock Gremlins (rogersampson)

Sorry to revive an old thread but my R is having an almost identical problem with my rear passenger door lock. I brought it in to have the coolant sensor reset and have the door lock problem fixed, it's now been there for 3 days and not sure if it'll be fixed tomorrow. My local dealer brought in a field technician to look at it too. So far they've replaced the door lock actuator/motor and it's still having the same problem - randomly locks & unlocks at fast speeds, slow speeds, and even when the car is off and I use the keyfob to unlock (and it immediately locks itself after). Looking for someone who had this problem and had it fixed, who wouldn't be afraid to IM me what dealer did it, perhaps I can have my dealer's service department talk to your dealer's service department... Thanks.

1 week and 2 days, on the 3rd actuator and still having the same issue. Field technician is coming out again tomorrow to see what else it could be. If they can't fit it, do I get a new R?

You know, my wife had the same crazy problem with an Oldsmobile Aurora ... multiple multiple trips to the dealer. Her car would just be unlocked randomly sometimes when she returned. At first, everyone thought she was nuts ... or forgretful. Turned out she was right, and it was the switch in the drivers door that was actuating the lock mechanism intermittently.

All too often I'd return to the car and find that door unlocked. Turns out it was a lubrication issue, it would not go down easily and never fully locked using the power locks and as a result would only go 3/4 down and then slowly creep back up to fully unlocked position. One time it popped and some how the door actually opened (to the first position) with my son in the back seat while driving, that's when I stopped procrastinating and got it fixed
LTA
Re: Door Lock Gremlins (Quick Brick)

Again, thanks for the advice Quick Brick but it didn't turn out to be with the driver's side window controls either. Tomorrow a field technician and the service manager are going to lock themselves in a room with my R until they figure out what's wrong... keeping my fingers crossed it does, this 2.5T is uh, lacking.

Sorry to hear it was not the switch. That being said, it would make sense that the problem would be on the actuator end.
... I hope they did their troubleshooting with a proven good switch.

Re: Door Lock Gremlins (Quick Brick)

Sometimes when I close my drivers door the overhead interior lights go out, but the floor lights don't. If I open and reclose my drivers door all the lights go out as they should.
I know this is a different issue, but you'd think that if some of the lights went out, they all would. Strange.
I realize that this doesn't help you now, but maybe it will help increase our understanding in some way.
Re: Door Lock Gremlins (liverichly)

Today's update is that they determined there were no electrical wiring shorts throughout the entire R so they are going to replace the main electrical module (I think that's what they called it) that they are pretty sure will do the trick. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well no dice when they changed out the electronic control module, so two different ECM's, 3 different actuator's... and still having the same problem. Anyone know what's next?

Re: (liverichly)

Update:
So the next step for Volvo was to replace the entire rear wiring harness, and as they were getting into the process they noticed an electrical wire running from my right rear door lock mechanism to a little box... well this box was my LOJACK. They don't have the ability to disconnect the LOJACK and test it today, but I am thinking that has to be what is causing that door lock to lock & unlock itself at random times, and so did the shop foreman. Anyway, they said they'd call back tomorrow and let me know if it was it, I sure as heck hope so... been nearly a month without the R!
