I've been contemplating putting a front mount on the car and I have a question, does the oem factory Volvo boost sensor measure actual flow like a mass air flow sensor, or is it more of a manifold absolute pressure sensor?

It's position in the factory intercooler with quite a bit of the sensor sticking out (1/4") into the air flow would suggest that it is more than just a simple map sensor.

The boost pressure sensor is integrated with a temperature sensor.

Mass air flow is measured at the MAF sensor directly after the air filter.

The ecu continually compares the MAF reading from the MAF sensor to a calculated mass air flow that it calculates based on the RPM and boost pressure reading.

If there is too much of a discrepancy between the MAF reading and the calculated mass air flow the ecu will set a code and you will get a check engine light.

Cheers,

Jeff
