Hello everyone, I have never really looked at volvos before (always been a VW enth.) so I had a simple question. My mom wants me to sell my GTI and get a safe car so I thought why not get an 850R. The only problem is them I do not want an automatic. Can these cars be found with manual trans? Thanks for the help,
Philippe

They're available, but pretty rare. They were only sold in Canada. I don't know about 850 T-5s or Turbos though. With the ipd upgrade, it's the same hp as the R I believe, and you might have an easier time finding a manual.
Too bad, you just missed an R with manual in Massachusettes a couple of months ago on ebay.

Philippe,
You will have an extremely hard time trying to find an 850R with a manual transmission in the United States. The 850R and 850 T5-R with a manual transmission never legally made it to North America.
Although, these cars did come to Canada with 250hp and a manual tranmission. There was someone on Ebay recently who was selling a red 850R with a manual transmission and I think that it might have come from Canada. I am not sure what eventually happened to that car though.
If you must have a Volvo and a manual transmission, the S70 T5 would be a good way to go in my opinion. A manual shouldn't be too hard to find, plus they can be chipped and tuned just like an 850R.
My 02. cents...
-Drew

As much as I loved my R, and it had a lot of toys on it like 17" wheels and a great suspension, the first gen 70-series cars are a little more refined and you can build out a T-5 to look the part of an S70R. That'd be cool.

Here's a couple I found in Canada in case you're seriously looking :

1996 VOLVO 850 120000 km $ 19,888.00

1996 VOLVO 850 94000 km $ 19,800.00
Prices are in Cdn so divide by 1.6 and divide by 1.649 to convert km's to miles.
Last August I "almost" convinced my girlfriend to buy a 95 yellow T5-R sedan with MANUAL transmission and low miles. Oh well, she wanted the reasurrance of a warranty and picked up a brand new 1.8t Golf, still a blast to drive.
I bought an AWD Legacy wagon this winter to test out a] how much fun AWD is in winter and b] how much we'd really use a wagon. I think I'm hooked so I may be looking for a Volvo turbo wagon though I'm not sure if they make a high pressure model with AWD .

How did you guys find the cars in Canada?
I'm really really serious about buying an 850R (since my car was recently totalled from a theft - Acura Integra).
Always been a Volvo fan, and always wanted the R. Now's my chance, but I am also a manual driver.
Hard to say if it is worth more or not, less Volvo drivers are actually looking for a manual than the auto, but the ones who are certainly might be willing to fork over top dollar. It seems the manual 850s excluding the R sells for less here. It all depends if the seller can find his target market or I would say they would be of equal value, not more. Not sure how it would be in a market without them originally though.
