I have been with this group for almost three years. Earlier today there was some bantering back and forth from a guy who asked some questions. It got a little heated. Several people popped in and said basically that this topic has been discussed until the horse died and that this guy should do a search before he asks a question. On the few times that I asked a question, I have tried to do a search. with mixed results. Saturday, I was trying to find that thread that discussed getting wax off the black body trim that the '04's have. I finally got it, but it took several attempts and mixing the words around to get it. I knew it was there, but had to work at retrieving it. If I didn't know it was there, I would have given up and just asked the question in the forum. Probably would have gotten the answer that it has been discussed before and that I should do a search before I ask the question. I think we should be a little more patient and let people ask questions. Things evolve, things change, and answers change. Asking a question again might get new insight. Suggesting to do a search is fine, but I think its ok to put the question out there is ok. If everyone is bored with answering the same question a million times, then let it sit or suggest doing a search. oclv

Re: Do a Search (oclv)

If burried in the archives I understand.
If similar threads are still going on the first page of the forum then I think a remark is in place.

True, the search function requires some attention to get the best out of it but still..

Re: Do a Search (oclv)

oclv,I completely agree. I have tried searches before using the EXACT phraseology that's in the thread, and the search has come up "no results found". After a bit of digging, I find the thread, and it has the EXACT phrase I typed into the original search (WTH?). I'm not talking about common words like "the" "and", etc, but more unique phrases/references. And this happens even with recent (not just archived) stuff. So, I agree that unless the search engine (or our knowledge of how best to use it) can be improved, we need to be patient with everyone who asks a question that might have been discussed.

Re: Do a Search (oclv)

the search function blows.

by request of some users here I set up a wiki that is much easier to search. doesn't have the content yet, but I invite any of you who consider a thread to be worth sharing to post it on the wiki. this would be a community driven FAQ similar to the one that Jim (painfully) maintains on the R forum.

here's a start of a list for R mods:

Nice job vizwiz. I like it a lot.

The search function is painful. I have tried to find things and you have to really know what you're looking for, and be very patient.

BTW...I like the R hat! Matches the Gobi well. It was sad to see Sniz's car on the calendar though.

I do feel, though, that if there are topics that have been beaten to death, NICELY requesting that they do a search and to be patient, it is out there, is wholely appropriate.

After experiencing much of the same, I've found you are better off searching "Google" or whatever engine you prefer. Often times you can end up back here at the right post in Swedespeed, or you can find the answer you are looking for through a search engine at other Volvo community websites.......... http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

I've used Boolean strings for searches many times in the search engine and even then it's quite tough to find what you want for some reason (and having the content spread across two volumes necessitating separate searches just aggravates things.)

A few of the other auto forums I visit seem to have incorporated the Google search directly into their sites alongside their native search engines. Can this be done here?

Using Google to search swedespeed

Perhaps many already know this, nonetheless, I thought I would post it here. If you want to use Google to search a particular site, all that you need to do is to go to google.com, type in your search words followed by site:swedespeed.com

For example: 2007 S60R site:swedespeed will return 115 posts that include either 2007 or S60R on the topic. You can place the search words in "" to search for a specific phrase.

you so rock, I had no idea you could do that on Google.

for example,

232 posts on swedespeed.com with "Cold Air Intake".

Or if you are already in swedespeed.com and have the google search bar up on your screen all the time, just type in the term you want, click on the "G seach" down arrow, click on current site and you are done. Only trouble is, it searches the entrie site not just the R forum.

Re: Do a Search (oclv)

Here's an example of why the Search function is questionable:

Try typing in "Wheel Offset Tutorial". THis was a thread started by Jim Lill a while back. Try searching for it under "recent" or "Archived", "Topic" or "body".....Search comes up empty all times

THen, try typing "Wheel Offset". You get a bunch of hits. One of them, lo and behold, is Jim's. And whaddya know...the topic title is EXACTLY "Wheel Offset Tutorial".

What gives?

Disclaimer...tried it again, and DID manage to find it under "Recent" and "Topic". Kinda like how you go to the dealer complaining about a noise, and the noise chooses that moment NOT to happen
