Recently had a trans/transfer case issue, brought it to a trans specialist, informed me it was the transfer case.
quoted ~1300 for the repair (total)

I am not the wealthiest college student at the moment...so i am looking into DIY

How hard is it to remove and replace it. I can find the part for ~$500 used and ~$750 new.

I have jack, jack-stands,ramps, pneumatic tools, and my toolbox (which should have everything).

level of difficulty?
what do i need other then the transfer case?
guide?

[I did search before posting]
thanks all..trying to keep my 174k volvo alive.

I haven't ever done one on a volvo yet. I have done them on other vehicles but since I haven't looked into doing it not sure what other parts you would need. Are you repairing the internals or just swapping out the whole unit? Taking a transfer case apart would make it a little more difficult.
I would definitely go with a new transfer case if your just replacing since these do fail once they reach a certain age and depending on the driving habit of the previous owner.

Here's a quick guide that may help you a little bit hopefully

Thank you,
I was planning on getting a used low Mileage refurbished unit for ~$600
My car has 174k... so I'm not looking to spend too much.

Well if it was refurbished then bearings and seals should have been replaced already

I would replace your spline sleeve while in there. It may be your only problem if it's just stripped out.

My 221k S60 angle gear (tcase) was fine and I just replaced the $110 spline sleeve and I have AWD again!

I was going to replace the assembly. Not just the sleeves etc.

Awd still functions as of right now... that's what makes the noise

If you're really looking to save money just pull the haldex fuse and go FWD for now. Might also have to pull the driveshaft to stop the noise.

That's a smart idea. I just upgraded my tools .. found a very good deal. So i think I will attempt the repair. the airtools should handle it well.
