Pulling out of the car park from work today, and within 5 mins with the A/C Max, the car's display (anything electronic - A/C, lights, windows, etc) shut off. The car is still on, can still drive, but no power. CEL is on, SRS Light, No Brakes messages all kick in. Radio can turn on. Speedometer, RPM, gas, temp gauge - all flat.
Is this related to the DIM only? Or is there a SEM error going on? Also, tech hooked it up to and found that the RPM reading was off by about 700 rpms - ie. computer read 740, rpm tach read 1500 (maybe it was vice versa).
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Re: DIM Error - Advice Request - 2004 S60R (dc2774)

CEM - Central Electronic Module, not SEM.
I would suspect that it's not just a DIM problem. Try a new battery. This type of fault has been known to happen when voltage drops.

Thanks.
Would this be related to an earlier post I wrote after a spirited run in the rain - where I heard a loud clunk and A/C cut off and turned back on?

However, it should not "clunk", it would be seamless!

The only way I can tell my a/c compressor has cycled on or off at idle is by the vacuum gauge on my dash.
Now, my 08 Chevy Express workvan, when that thing cycles there is NO mistaking it. THUNK........click........THUNK.... etc

Right. There are definitely times when you hear/feel the A/C cut off under WOT. This was more a "clunk" then the A/C cut off - then after a few mins it cut back on. I'll check with the tech in the morning re: the battery. He sent me a text just now saying that he ended up checking the voltage and noted it was lower than normal. He'll spend more time on it tomorrow. Told him about Needsdecaf post and he said he's glad he's going in the right direction BTW, would an alternator/battery change also fix some of the gear "upshifts" or should I push for a software upgrade?
Anything else I should get checked based on the above symptoms? I'm having the front bushings, upper engine mount, gas cap, gas cover hinge replaced under VIP while it's in there too. Also changing the spark plugs since he'll have it accessible when doing the upper engine mount - free install and I bought the plugs from IPD - saved $100+

Re: (dc2774)

What was the ambiant air temp in the car when it happened????
Mine does the same exact thing whenever the air temp is 85+ inside the car and I don't have the A/C on. I changed the battery and had a charging system scan done and mine was all OK but it still does it. And once it shuts the DIM down I am also stuck in whatever gear it was in when it went down, until I restart the car.

Blazing SoFl summer heat - probably 95-100 exterior temp. Car is still at the tech, but supposedly it sat overnight and it started fine with no error codes this morning. Luckily I brought it in yesterday so he could actually see what was wrong! Bought a new battery this morning, so we'll see what happens. He was going to check the alternator as well.
I tried to shut down and restart, but it just kept happening so just drove with everything shut down but the engine.

Re: (Overun73)

I talked to my local Volvo dealer today and he hasn't heard of anything about a known issue with the voltage reg but he can see how it may affect the CEN if the charging system isn't working right. Dealer price on the reg is $150 but I can get it for an even $100, so if you find that it may fix your problem and you can't get it at a good price let me know.

Still haven't heard back yet. Most of the other stuff got done (suspensions). I'm supposed to get a call today to see where we are.
Is there a specific way to tell if the reg IS actually dead? That way, I can get them to replace it under VIP warranty.

Re: (dc2774)

The only thing I can think of is running the car till it acts up again and then doing a charging system check. Other than that I haven't heard or know of any way.

before you buy a new battery verify voltage with digital VM, both while running and not running.
Running (just at idle) should provide around 13.1-13.2 volts.

Oops - reupped the wrong thread - this was the one I was referring to:(
Hate to re-up an old thread BUT.....
It did it again. After the battery change which of course was not covered by VIP everything seemed fine. Pulled out of the outdoor lot from work (95 read on the dash) and THUMP, THUMP, and the lights shut off again. Everything. Exact same symptoms as last time. I'm taking it back in the morning but I just know it won't have a problem because it's sitting in the garage all night to cool down.
1) What should I do this time?
2) Tech said the regulator is the "newer" one
I just have a feeling he's going to hook this up and it will not throw codes like last time.
Help

2004. For some reason, this does not happen when i rains - which is what the tech asked as well. Ignition switch - if that was bad, my car wouldn't turn on would it? Not sure. I'm out of ideas outside of what's been posted - voltage regulator, etc. Seems to only happen when it's blazing hot outside and the car has been sitting out there.
Should I ask for the voltage regulator to be changed anyway? The last time it was in, the tech did a voltage check the next morning and everything was fine (except the battery, which got changed).
He's running out of ideas too.....

No one? Could really need some help.....
He said maybe there is a short in the DIM that's causing everything to shut down? The voltage readings seem to be fine.
